Java/iX will run on MPE/iX 6.0 or 5.5. We believe it will also run on MPE/iX 5.0 with patch MPEHX70, but this has not been tested.

This is the production release of JDK 1.1.7B. The 'B' designation is from Sun, and indicates that additional fixes were made after the supposedly-final JDK 1.1.7 FCS (Final Customer Shipment) release.

It is expected that the code for this release will be packaged as a patch to update supported users of Java on MPE/iX 6.0 to this newer version. For MPE/iX 5.5, Java continues to be unsupported freeware. (Although the lab will look at and make reasonable efforts to correct any problems encountered).

New features in this release

See the Release Note for detailed information about changes in the JDK 1.1.7B Release

(JDK 1.1.7) Runtime.exec() method is now operational.

(JDK 1.1.7) Faster startup time and decreased memory usage. (Thanks, Gavin!)

(JDK 1.1.7) There is no longer a hard-coded limit of 35 threads. You can create as many threads as will fit in memory.

(JDK 1.1.7) Improved JIT for better performance.

(JDK 1.1.5) A number of bug fixes should improve both reliability and performance. Biggest fix is the Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI) is now working. Also, a later version of the JIT is included, which is about 30% faster than the JIT in versions 1.1.2 and 1.1.4.

(JDK 1.1.4) The classes.zip file is now correctly packaged as a bytestream file, resulting in a 3x to 6x speedup in the classloader. Numerous bug fixes from JavaSoft. Some MPE-specific bugfixes as well.

(JDK 1.1.2) A just-in-time compiler is now included in the Java distribution. It is invoked automatically by the java runtime; you don't need to do anything different to use it. (If you want to run without the just-in-time compiler for some reason, use command line option -nojit.

Known limitations in this release

(5.5 only) Patches required for inner classes. The Java 1.1 Inner Classes feature requires the use of filenames with an embedded '$' character. This is illegal in POSIX filenames. Patches are available to extend MPE filename characters beyond the POSIX specification to be more in line with most UNIX systems. These patches are MPEJXQ1 and PX2JXQ2.
