HP Predictive Support User's Guide For HP 3000 Series 900

Phase 4: Checking the Electronic File Transfer Requirements

Verify the following information about the electronic file transfer
facilities:

   * A modem must be available to transfer data to the HP Response
Center. HP Predictive Support should not be installed where a
       modem cannot be used.

   * The system's remote console feature must be operative.

   * Response Center Engineer (RCE) must be allowed to perform timely
remote diagnostics. RCE will request permission to perform remote
diagnostics at times convenient for the site.

   * One analog telephone line, located near the system DTC or LAN
console port, for file transfers and remote diagnostic activities.
(The phone line must be installed and operational at the time HP
       Predictive Support is installed).

   * One telephone, located near the system, for discussions between
the HP Response Center and the system administrator during remote
       diagnostic activities.

   * There is at least one modem, preferably from among those that are
supported by HP Predictive Support in autodial mode. The modems
supported by HP Predictive Support are listed in Table 2-2 and
Appendix C, "Setting Modem Options". (You may wish to use two
modems for security purposes if using other than an HP 37212B or
HP 50759A modem. "Dialin Security Considerations", in Phase 5
under "Configurations for other Modems", discusses the security
       issues for other modems.)

          Table 2-2. Supported Autodial Modems

HP 50759A * SupportLink
HP 37212B * SupportLink II
HP 37212A DataBridge

Identifying the Modem

Verify whether or not the system modem is an HP 50759A. If the modem is
an HP 50759A, determine whether or not it is an upgraded modem. Upgraded
modems are identified as follows:

   * A sticker is on the underside of the modem, if it has been
       upgraded at the site.

   * The modem has a serial number greater than 1101348 if it has been
       upgraded by the manufacturer.

If the modem has not been upgraded, install a firmware upgrade kit (Part
Number 50759-60001) at the time of the HP Predictive Support
installation.

NOTE Use of an upgraded HP 50759A modem simplifies the enabling of the remote console. Therefore, you should install the firmware upgrade before HP Predictive Support is installed. Note also that you must dial in twice to enable the remote console when using the upgraded HP 50759A modem. If an upgrade kit is not available at the time of installation, be sure to install one at the earliest opportunity. Additional information on the 50759A modem is in Appendix C, "Setting Modem Options".
