MPE/iX Release 4.0 - A Platform Release

by Nathan Pendleton
Commercial Systems Division

The MPE/iX software release processes have been enhanced to deliver a
Software Platform Release. A Platform Release provides an extremely
stable release that is supported for an extended period of time while
also allowing the easy receipt of specific new functionality, product
enhancements, and patches. Release 4.0 is the first platform release for
MPE/iX software.

Many MPE/iX customers have expressed the desire to become more productive
in the management of their systems by having a stable software foundation
on which additional key functionality can be added over time. This would
avoid having to incur an update to a major release in order to get
specific new products and functionality. Release 4.0 as the Platform
Release sets the stage for these productivity improvements. The intent
of the Platform Release strategy is the same for both MPE/V and MPE/iX
releases; however, some of the implementation details are different.

Specifically, the MPE/iX Platform Release:

   * has extended support life (2 years minimum)

   * is distributed to every support customer who is entitled to
       software updates (a push distribution)

   * is the HP suggested release

   * is released every 12 to 18 months

   * is the target for specific new functionality and enhancements
while eliminating the need to modify your entire system

   * is named for easy identification by using an n.0 approach as with
       the 4.0 in MPE/iX Release 4.0

Platform Releases are tailored for those customers who desire extended
support life from Hewlett-Packard and access to certain future products
while minimizing the impact on their existing environment. Hewlett
Packard will continue to release new products and new functionality as
part of the normal MPE/iX software release process, but not all of these
releases will become a Platform Release. For further information please
contact your Hewlett-Packard account or support representative.
