COMMUNICATOR 3000 MPE MPE/iX RELEASE 4.0

Chapter 2 SYSTEM PRODUCTS AND INFORMATION

MPE XL Renamed to MPE/iX

by Sridhar Ramanathan
Commercial Systems Division

The HP 3000 has a long history of openness through the support of key
standards in the areas of user interfaces, networking, languages, tools,
and databases. We are completing a five year plan that will expand the
openness of the HP`3000 with the delivery of POSIX, an industry standard
operating system interface.

POSIX is available today to help developers bring more POSIX/UNIX* based
solutions to the HP`3000. With the shipment of the developer release of
POSIX earlier this year, we renamed MPE XL to MPE/iX, to reflect the
clear commitment to standards. That is why you will see references to
MPE/iX in much of the software documentation and banners in this release.

Future releases will reference MPE/iX to an even higher degree as we
finish updating documentation and software. POSIX will be available for
end-users with the next release of MPE/iX in order to run POSIX/UNIX
applications.

So how does the name change to MPE/iX affect you? The bottom line is
that the name change is completely transparent to you. Here are key
points to bear in mind with the 4.0 release of MPE/iX.

   * No modifications of any kind are required for current MPE XL
       applications.

   * You do not have to do anything to get MPE/iX. If you are running
MPE XL today, you will get MPE/iX with this release.

   * POSIX end-user support will be folded in transparently in the next
Commerical Systems MPE/iX Release (in other words, after MPE/iX
Release 4.0). If you want the POSIX functionality of MPE/iX, it
will be yours free of charge.

   * If you do not want POSIX functionality, you do not have to use it.
As with all of our open functionality, POSIX is transparent to you
and does not affect performance of any MPE applications.

   * If you have classic HP`3000s that are running MPE V, your upgrade
path to MPE/iX is the same as it was to MPE XL. That is, the
migration is the same, or you can still use MPE V compatibility
mode and run your applications as is.

As you can see, the messages behind the MPE/iX name change are very
positive. We hope that you will agree that the HP 3000 is more open than
ever, and that we are working hard to protect your investments.

* UNIX is a registered trademake of AT&T in the U.S.A. and in other
countries.
