The Commercial Systems MPE/iX Release 4.0 (B.40.00) introduces many new
products and contains performance enhancements to a number of existing
products.

SYSTEM PRODUCTS AND INFORMATION

Beginning with this Commercial Systems Release, the MPE operating system
has a new name. MPE XL is now renamed to MPE/iX. This renaming reflects
our commitment to openness through the support of key standards on the HP
3000, which includes the delivery of POSIX.

MPE/iX Release 4.0 is the first platform release for MPE/iX software. As
with the MPE/V Platform Release strategy, an MPE/iX Platform Release
provides an extremely stable release that is supported for an extended
period of time while allowing the easy receipt of specific new
functionality, product enhancements, and patches. In addition, there are
some implementation details unique to MPE/iX.

As a reminder, the support termination dates for XL Release 2.2, 3.0, and
3.1 are explained.

This release introduces the HP 3000 Corporate Business Systems. These
systems deliver mainframe performance, data center management
functionality, and high availability at a significantly lower cost of
ownership than traditional mainframes. If you are a current HP 3000
high-end customer, you can upgrade to the Corporate Business Systems
platform and increase your system performance while gaining greater
connectivity and configurability.

Hewlett-Packard expands its systems offering with the HP 3000 9x7
systems, a family of computer systems that provide seamless upgrades and,
like the HP 3000 Corporate Business Systems, offer lower cost of
ownership than the competition.

HP Easytime/iX is an easy-to-use, window-based interface to commonly
performed system management functions on low-end MPE/iX systems. The
context-sensitive online help facility was designed with the novice user
in mind and provides simple, concise information. Experienced users,
such as system managers, also have the flexibility to customize the user
interface for specific end-user services and to utilize full MPE/iX
functionality.
