Combined SLT and STORE Set

Included with this release of MPE/iX are enhanced versions of the system
generator (SYSGEN), STORE/RESTORE, and the TurboSTORE products.
SYSGEN is used to create the MPE/iX system load tape (SLT) and STORE or
TurboSTORE is used to put user files on another set of tapes. In the
past, the SLT has always been separate from STORE file sets and required
separate tapes. With these enhanced versions of SYSGEN, STORE/RESTORE,
and the TurboSTORE products, you can now combine an SLT and any STORE
fileset to make a combined SLT/STORE Set. These enhancements, along with
the large capacity of the digital data storage (DDS) device, allow both
the SLT and STORE file sets to fit on a single cassette. This feature
allows you easily and more cost effectively to create and archive a
system backup.
In order to provide a combined SLT/STORE Set, SYSGEN and STORE were
changed to allow the ability to STORE files after the SLT. The approach
taken is similar to that used by MPE V. The MPE V SYSDUMP command can
store user files after the coldload portion of the tape. These files can
be retrieved either by a reload or a separate RESTORE.
MPE/iX handles this process by storing the file set immediately after the
SLT. The file set can be restored by skipping over the SLT prior to
attempting to do the RESTORE. The way an SLT gets written out today will
not change. SYSGEN needs to be invoked to create an SLT. Once this tape
is written, it can be used to STORE and RESTORE files after the SLT
image. This implementation is different from MPE V in that files cannot
be restored during an INSTALL (same as MPE V RELOAD). The only way that
the STORE files can be retrieved from the combined SLT/STORE Set is
through the RESTORE command.

related article in the "Technical Articles" section in this Communicator.
