COMMUNICATOR 3000 MPE MPE/iX RELEASE 4.0
UPDATE Enhancements
by Rachel Schwab and Fred Parkes
Commercial Systems Division
The UPDATE program has been enhanced for this release of MPE/iX to check
that the system has at least 60,000 contiguous sectors of disk space on
LDEV 1 before proceeding with the update. The HP 3000 MPE/iX
Installation, Update, and Add-On Manual (36123-90001) still instructs you
to check for enough contiguous disk space by building the dummy
AXLDEV1.PUB.SYS file; however, if you ignore this step, the consequences
are not severe since now UPDATE also does this checking. Additionally,
UPDATE now purges this file so that you no longer need to purge it
yourself.
UPDATE WARNING SCREEN
If UPDATE cannot find enough contiguous space on LDEV 1, it outputs the
following warning message to the console:
WARNING: UPDATE tried to find 60000 sectors of contiguous disk
space on LDEV 1 for its work, but it could only find n0000 sectors.
Before continuing, refer to the "HP 3000 MPE XL Installation,
Update, and Add-On Manual" for instructions on collecting enough
contiguous space on LDEV 1 for the update. If you still
have questions after attempting the procedures outlined in
the manual, call your HP support representative for help.
You may override this warning and continue with the update, but
HEWLETT-PACKARD STRONGLY DISCOURAGES THIS COURSE OF ACTION.
DO NOT override this warning unless you have a full backup
available and the time to REINSTALL your system. If UPDATE
runs out of space on LDEV 1, you risk having to REINSTALL.
Override this warning message [OVERRIDE/NO; default = NO]?
If the answer is OVERRIDE, you then see:
Are you sure, [YES/NO; default = NO]?
If you reply YES, UPDATE continues; otherwise, UPDATE stops. An update
that occurs after this warning message has been overridden may
successfully complete; that is, in some cases UPDATE is successful even
if 60,000 contiguous sectors are not available.
CONTIGXL TOOL
You should remove files from LDEV 1 before reattempting to update. The
CONTIGXL tool may be used to determine which files to move from LDEV 1.
First, you must reboot your system. Then, if you do not have CONTIGXL
already on your system, you must restore the CONTIGXL program
and documentation files from the MPE/iX Release 4.0 FOS tape.
These files are named CONTIGXL.MPEXL.TELESUP (program file) and
CONTIGXL.DOCXL.TELESUP (documentation file). Last, after reading the
CONTIGXL documentation file for instructions, run CONTIGXL to obtain a
list of files to move from LDEV 1.
