AUTOINST/XL Enhancements

by Myrna Allen/Ruben Gallegos/Dave Maison/Geeta Patel
Commercial Systems Division

PRODUCT OVERVIEW AUTOINST/XL is a system program that is an integral
component of the complete installation process used to install MPE/iX
System Software. The System Load Tape (SLT), the Fundamental Operating
System (FOS), and the optionally purchased subsystem (SUBSYS) tapes
contain software that is shipped to you from the Software Replication and
Distribution Operation (SRDO) or from the Software Replication and
Distribution Operation Europe (SRDE). AUTOINST/XL is part of the SLT and
as a system program is automatically restored by an INSTALL or UPDATE.

With each order, you receive a SUBSYS tape(s) that has been customized
and contains only the products that you have purchased. This tape(s) is
created and shipped by SRDO/SRDE directly to you along with the SLT and
FOS tapes and appropriate manual(s).

With each new order, you need to update your system with the SLT and then
execute AUTOINST.

AUTOINST restores user files from the FOS, restores the contents of the
SUBSYS tape(s), creates the accounting structure, and streams and
monitors a set of jobstreams that complete the installation of some of
the HP subsystem products. In addition, AUTOINST integrates the SL
segments, XL and NL SOMs, and system programs on the SUBSYS tape with the
FOS components. It also generates a Customized System Load Tape (CSLT)
that you use to update your system with your new fully integrated
software.

Before performing an installation or update, please read this entire
article in order to understand the changes to this new version of
AUTOINST/XL, D.00.00.

PRODUCT ENHANCEMENTS The following new features and enhancements have
been added to AUTOINST/XL, version D.00.00 for MPE/iX Release 4.0:

New INSTALL.SYS Group AUTOINST is now automatically restored to the
INSTALL.SYS group. It will remain permanently in that group, and you
have to log on to the INSTALL.SYS group to run AUTOINST. All work done by
AUTOINST is done in the INSTALL.SYS group, and AUTOINST purges all work
files from the INSTALL.SYS group after it has successfully completed its
tasks.

Because D.00.00 version of AUTOINST/XL is restored to the INSTALL.SYS
group, it is possible for you to have a previous version of AUTOINST in
the PUB.SYS group if you are performing an update. To avert any problems
of running the old version of AUTOINST residing in PUB.SYS, it will be
overlaid by a small replacement program that prints a message informing
you to log on to the INSTALL.SYS group and then run AUTOINST.INSTALL.SYS.
This small program file and the old message catalog in PUB.SYS is purged
from the system as part of the clean-up done by AUTOINST.INSTALL.SYS once
it completes its tasks. AUTOINST.PUB.SYS and its catalog are also
removed from the SYSFILEP of all user configurations.

NOTE When backdating to a pre-4.0 release, the old AUTOINST is brought back onto the system. The new AUTOINST.INSTALL.SYS is also still there, but will not work correctly on a pre-4.0 release.
Combined Installation Tool AUTOINST combines the functionality of the MIT VERSION AUTOINST and AUTOINST/PowerPatch/iX so that you can perform all installation activities with one installation tool. In addition, AUTOINST has the capability of applying a factory-approved set of proactive patches from an accompanying PowerPatch/iX tape. Menu Options and Streams Device Changes Upon starting up, you see the following new startup menu and options: 1 = PowerPatch 2 = FOS, SUBSYS, PowerPatch 3 = FOS and SUBSYS 4 = Add-On (SUBSYS only) 5 = Exit After entering your choice, AUTOINST begins with the appropriate execution. * You can now choose the specific LDEV number for the tape device. AUTOINST validates the number as being a physical tape device and uses that number for all tape I/O instead of the default TAPE. The device does not have to be configured as class TAPE. * Passwords do not have to be removed from accounts for streaming I-files (Installation files for SUBSYS products). AUTOINST internally handles passwords for the I-files * The streams device is no longer required to be at LDEV 10. As long as the user correctly configures the streams device, the LDEV number for the streams device can be any supported number. * AUTOINST no longer streams a DUMP job to create the CSLT. SYSGEN is invoked programmatically to generate the CSLT. Output similar in content to the DUMP job's spool file can now be found in a file named AUTOLOG and in a spool file named SLOUTPUT. The AUTOLOG file is purged and created each time you run AUTOINST. * If AUTOINST is used to apply patches, it no longer creates a separate STORE tape containing patched program or data files. If there were any patched program or data files, these files are appended to the newly created CSLT. These files must be restored before updating with the CSLT. * All spool files from jobs streamed by AUTOINST now have an output priority of one. This defers all printing of the spool files until you alter the output priority. * Previously, you could perform the tasks required by manually installed products at either the middle of the installation process or after you updated with CSLT. Manually installed products can now only be handled at the end of the installation process, after you have updated with the CSLT. AXLDEV1 File Previously, you were asked to build and purge the file AXLDEV1!! to reserve contiguous disk space on LDEV 1. This step occurs once before installing or updating from the factory SLT at the beginning of the installation process, and then again just before you update with the CSLT at the end of the installation process.AUTOINST now builds the AXLDEV1 file. You are warned about the lack of disk space if AUTOINST cannot build the file. AUTOINST does not purge this file since UPDATE now looks for it during an installation or update from the factory SLT or the CSLT.
NOTE For MPE/iX Release 4.0, you must still build and purge AXLDEV1 prior to updating or installing with the factory SLT. This is because AUTOINST does not run until after the update or install from the factory SLT, and this space must be available for UPDATE to bring in the factory SLT components at the beginning of the installation process. When AUTOINST is run and completes its tasks, it builds AXLDEV1 and leaves it for UPDATE.
Audit Trail If AUTOINST has to be restarted, and an old audit trail (the HPINSTFL file) exists, then AUTOINST prompts the user that the file exists, and asks if the installation should be continued from the point that the previous run of AUTOINST was stopped. If the user answers no, then AUTOINST purges the audit trail and prints the startup menu to begin a new installation. AUTOINST Prints a Customized List of Special Products AUTOINST prints two customized lists: (1) a list of all products needing manual installation, and (2) a list of all products needing datacomm configuration. Previously, these lists included all the special products you have on your system as well as your newly purchased special products. Now these lists only include the special products you currently intend to install. If you have no products that need manual installation or datacomm configuration, no list is printed. DOCUMENTATION CHANGES The AUTOINST process changes have been incorporated into the installation and update manual. As a user, all that you need to do is to select the installation option from the AUTOINST menu, and respond to the tape device prompt. From this point until AUTOINST completes, the program proceeds with no further user input, other than mounting tapes when requested. The manual documents the AUTOINST process with images similar to what you see on the screen. In response to customers' requests that we simplify the instruction sets, we have also restructured the manual. The new manual, HP 3000 MPE/iX Installation, Update, and Add-on Manual (36126-90001) contains separate sections for an installation, update, and add-on. You can now select the specific function that you want to perform, start at the beginning of the appropriate section, and follow each step to completion. The sections in the new manual are as follows: Section 1: Read Me First Section 2: Installing with the FOS and SUBSYS Section 3: Updating with FOS and SUBSYS Section 4: Adding On Purchased Products - SUBSYS Only Appendix A: Installing/Configuring Manually Installed Products Appendix B: Configname Table Appendix C: Configuration Recommendations Appendix D: Reserving Space for AUTOINST and UPDATE Appendix E: Reinstalling Your System Appendix F: Backdating Your System to Release 3.1, 3.0, or 2.2 Appendix G: Installation/Update/Add-On Checklists Appendix H: Error Messages and Warnings This new format simplifies the sequence of steps. You no longer need to eliminate steps that pertain to a function that you are not performing. Only the steps you need to follow are included in each section.
