Introducing HP Easytime/iX
by Gordon MacKinney
Computer Systems Boeblingen
HP Easytime/iX (version A.00.01) is an easy-to-use interface to commonly
performed system management functions on low-end 9x7 MPE/iX systems. It
is similar to HP Easytime, which was released in 1987 for MPE V micros.
Based upon a state-of-the-art interface (UIMS ISA Dialog Manager) and
architecture, HP Easytime/iX provides a simple way to access the most
commonly used system management utilities. Context-sensitive online help
addresses the needs of the intended users: novice system managers and
end users with limited computer experience. HP Easytime/iX makes the
administration of MPE/iX systems possible without costly training.
PRODUCT FEATURES HP Easytime/iX consists of a logical and simple-to-use
hierarchy of windows that help simplify system management tasks, yet
still provide access to fundamental operating system functionality. The
following lists the HP Easytime/iX windows and describes their functions:
* Print file management: show status of print files, read files,
delete print files, put print files on hold, take print files off
hold, load/align forms, change number of copies, change print
device, print first, reprint
* Printer management: enable printer, disable printer, set outfence
* Backup management: perform full backup or partial backup, review
backup information, schedule full backup or partial backup
* Console management: read requests, reply to requests, read
console messages, print messages and requests
* Job management: review job details, start job, schedule job,
delete a job, suspend a job, resume a job, set job limit, set
jobfence, put on hold, take off hold, run next
* Session management: show sessions, abort sessions, send message,
set session limit
* File management: show list of files, read files, delete files,
print files, store/restore files, copy files, move/rename files,
release files, secure files
* Goto MPE: execute MPE/iX commands and run applications without
leaving HP Easytime/iX
* HP Easytime/iX customization: end-user restrictions, choice of
startup screen, whether console elimination is on or off,
streaming of jobs before or after a scheduled backup
* General capabilities: online help, ability to change presentation
of display data, flexible sort criteria, special options for
advanced users

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS Hardware Requirements The following
termials supported by UIMS ISA Dialog Manager may be used: HP 2392A, HP
700/9x and PC links emulating 2392A terminals (for example, AdvanceLink).
UNIX-to-MPE connections using vt3k are not supported.
Software Requirements
HP Easytime/iX requires this MPE/iX operating system or later versions.
NOTE HP Easytime/iX menu items, screen behavior, help text, and manuals
have been specifically designed for the user who has little
computer experience. As a result, more experienced system
administrators may find HP Easytime/iX to be simplistic and may,
therefore, prefer to use the MPE/iX command line interface.
Additionally, because HP Easytime/iX primarily addresses the
routine management of smaller systems, many midrange and high-end
environments will require functionality beyond that provided by
HP`Easytime/iX.
