SNA/SDLC Link is composed of hardware and software:
  • Programmable Serial Interface card (PSI) or Advanced Communication Controller card and cables (hardware)

  • SNA Transport (software)

  • SDLC or SDLCMUX link driver (software)

The hardware of SNA/SDLC Link (the PSI and cables) and the downloaded SNA Transport software implement the Physical Control layer of SNA, and the SDLC or SDLCMUX link driver implements the Data Link Control layer. The SDLC or SDLCMUX link driver controls transmission over the communications line.

Figure 1-1 "SNA/SDLC Link HP-to-IBM Host Communication" shows how SNA/SDLC Link and the SNA services implement HP e3000-to-IBM host communication.

Figure 1-2 "SNA/SDLC Link HP-to-AS/400 Communication" shows how SNA/SDLC Link and the SNA services implement HP e3000-to-IBM AS/400 communication.

Host Hardware and Software Requirements

SNA/SDLC Link requires this IBM host hardware:
  • An IBM System/370-compatible mainframe (for example, Model 370, 303x, and 43xx).

  • An IBM 37xx-compatible communications controller that supports an SNA line. An HP e3000 can also be connected to the communications controller via an IBM 3710 network controller.

SNA/SDLC Link requires this IBM host software:
  • MVS/SP, MVS/XA, VSE, or VM operating system.

  • ACF/NCP network control program. (For a T2.1 node, version 5 release 2 or later is needed for the IBM 3720 and IBM 3745, and version 4 release 3 is needed for the IBM 3725.)

  • ACF/VTAM telecommunications access method. (For a T2.1 node, version 3 release 2 or later is needed.)

For more-specific information, contact your Hewlett-Packard sales representative.

AS/400 Hardware and Software Requirements

SNA/SDLC Link requires this IBM AS/400 hardware:
  • An IBM AS/400 computer system with the appropriate communications controller card installed.

SNA/SDLC Link requires this IBM AS/400 software:
  • OS/400 operating system (all SNA-related software is included within the OS/400 operating system).

For more-specific information, contact your Hewlett-Packard sales representative.

HP e3000 Hardware and Software Requirements

You can run SNA/SDLC Link on any HP e3000 computer that has at least 32MB of real memory. Depending on your system configuration, more memory might be required. Contact your Hewlett-Packard sales representative for more information.

SNA/SDLC Link requires this HP e3000 hardware:
  • A HP e3000 computer system.

  • A Programmable Serial Interface (PSI) card or Advanced Communication Controller (ACC) card and the appropriate cables (contact your Hewlett-Packard sales representative for more information). One PSI is required for each active link to the remote system, and eight active links can be supported on the ACC card.

  • A switched or leased full-duplex or half-duplex data communications line between the HP e3000 and the remote system. Note that whether full-duplex or half-duplex transmission is used is determined by the remote system configuration or the modem used on the remote system.

  • A block mode terminal that is supported by VPLUS, for use with the Node Management Services (NMS) NMMGR configuration manager.

SNA/SDLC Link requires this HP e3000 software:
  • HP e3000 Multiprogramming Executive with Integrated POSIX (MPE/iX) operating system.
