Anyone can generate an alert to be sent to the IBM remote
system operator (no special user capabilities are needed). This
function can be used for sending error-related information that
might not be automatically reported by error detection programs
and utilities.
To be able to generate alerts, ensure that a message file
exists for each SNA node you want to send alerts to (see "Creating
the Message File" earlier in this appendix). Once the appropriate
message file exists, you can send an alert by typing this command
at the MPE system prompt:
RUN SNAOPALT.PUB.SYS
A message noting the operator-generated message program is displayed,
and then you are prompted for this information:
SNA node name
Required. The name of the SNA node you are sending the alert
to. The name can be up to eight alphanumeric characters long; the
first character must be alphabetic. Note that the node must have
already been configured (but it does not have to be active).
Action code
Required. An integer from 1 through 20 which indicates the
message panel you want displayed on the remote system. The message
panels are defined in the NPDA data base. Check with the remote
system operator or system programmer for the applicable action codes
and their corresponding screens.
Text
The message you want to send to the remote system. The message can
be up to 120 alphanumeric characters long.
Qualifier 1 field
Additional information that you want to send with the alert (for
example, a telephone number or a manual number). The qualifier can
be up to eight alphanumeric characters long.
Qualifier 2 field
Additional information that you want to send with the alert (for
example, a telephone number or a manual number). The qualifier can
be up to eight alphanumeric characters long.
Qualifier 3 field
Additional information that you want to send with the alert (for
example, a telephone number or a manual number). The qualifier can
be up to eight alphanumeric characters long.
See Appendix A "Messages" for the error messages that
can occur when you send an operator-generated NetView alert.
