Collecting Performance Data
Data collection, reduction, and classification take place on the HP 3000.
Running as a batch job, the SCOPE(XL) collector continuously gathers
pertinent performance metrics with minimal system overhead. The program
then reduces and logs the metrics to logfiles that are maintained in an
internally circular format. The sizes of these logfiles can be set by
the user.
Figure 2-1.
These logfiles are called raw logfiles to differentiate them from
user-created extracted HP LaserRX/MPE logfiles which contain selected
ranges of data.
Another HP LaserRX/MPE program that runs on the HP 3000 is called
EXTRACT. You can use EXTRACT to create additional logfiles that reflect
your specifications for scope and content. These refined logfiles are
called "extracted logfiles." You can use EXTRACT on raw or extracted
logfiles. That is, you can extract data from already extracted logfiles
if you wish to specify them further.

Both raw and extracted logfiles can be accessed by HP LaserRX/MPE
analysis software on the PC. In addition, extracted logfiles can be
downloaded to the PC's hard disc so that the HP LaserRX/MPE analysis
software can access them whether or not the PC is logically connected at
the time of analysis to the HP 3000 from which the files originated.
