Sending Telexes
If HP Telex is available on your system you may be able to send and
receive telexes from within HP Desk. See your HP Desk Administrator to
find out if this is possible on your system.
To send a telex:
You send a telex message in the same way that you send a message to any
other HP Desk user, but you have to include the telex address, which must
be enclosed in parentheses.
1. Type SEND at any HP Desk prompt.
2. At the TO: prompt enter the name and HP Telex location on one
line. Enter the address and answerback on the next line. For
example:
TO:Joe Carter /TELEX1 (042 101275:ADFIRM G) Return
3. Enter text in the same way as an HP Desk message.
4. Use MAIL when you are ready to send the telex.
The following Distribution List shows how you might send a message to
both telex and HP Desk addressees, at the same time.
TO:Chris Cook/TELEX1 (042 45143:BQDRAW G) Return
Mara Key/HP1200/02 Return
Return
CC:Riki Stone/HP1000/02 Return
Further Information
* Telex machines print 69 characters per line, with additional
characters word-wrapped to the next line.
* You can use any alphanumeric character, as well as
( ) = ? / ' + : , . - characters in messages you send as
telexes. Any other character you include in a telex will appear
in the recipient's copy as @ or ?.
* You may need to quote answerback codes to send telexes from HP
Desk. Ask your HP Desk Administrator for details.
* The purpose of the HP Telex location name is to tell HP Desk that
you want to send the message by telex. Ask your HP Desk
Administrator what this HP Telex location name is for your system.
* A telex number may need an extra code - like a country or network
code. Always leave a space between the code and telex number.
* If you set a level 2 acknowledgment on the message before you mail
it, a copy of the message will remain in your Pending Tray. This
will be useful if your telex is not sent for any reason.
* Any HP Desk item can be sent as a telex, although you will lose
text enhancements and the telex message will all be in capitals.
However graphics and VisiCalc items will be replaced by a summary
message in the telex copies.
* Messages to be sent as telexes may be marked urgent, however
messages marked private will not be sent to telex addressees.
* For more information on sending telexes refer to Using HP Telex.
To check if your telex has been sent:
There are two ways in which you can be notified of successful telex
transmissions:
* The HP Desk Administrator may set up your system so that you will
be informed of the successful transmission of your telexes by a
sent message in your In Tray.
* If the above option is not used, you can still check that your
telex has been transmitted by requesting a received acknowledgment
(2) on your telex message. Whatever acknowledgment level you set,
you'll only get a received acknowledgment (2) met for a telex
message.
What to do if your telex is not sent:
If your telex is not sent you will receive a message in your In Tray, one
from everyone on your telex Distribution List, giving a brief reason for
the failure. If your message is addressed to telex destinations and HP
Desk users, a not sent message only applies to the telex addressees.
* Always keep a copy of the telexes you send so that you can send
them again if they are not delivered. The best way to do this is
to request a level 2 acknowledgment on the message when you mail
it. You can then open the message in the Pending Tray and send
the text part again.
* You can also resubmit a telex directly from HP Telex. Ask your HP
Desk Administrator or see the reference book Using HP Telex for
details.
Receiving Telexes
If telexes include a routing sequence they will be delivered to your In
Tray, just like ordinary HP Desk messages.
The routing sequence can be placed anywhere in the text of a telex and
should include the name of the sender after the end sequence. The
routing sequence can be recognized by its unique start and end character
sequences. For example:
HPHP
ANNA MURPHY
JUNE MORGAN/ACC120/03
. MICHELE FONE
where HPHP and . are the start and end sequences respectively.
Further Information
* Your HP Desk Administrator will be able to provide you with
details of start and end routing sequences that you should use.
You can end the routing sequence with a blank line instead of an
end sequence.
* The sender may also add a subject to the routing sequence and
specify an HP Desk Distribution List by a colon (:) prefix. For
example, if the subject is accounts, your name Loretta Jeanes and
you are sending to a Distribution List called saleslist:
HPHP ACCOUNTS
:SALESLIST
. LORETTA JEANES
* Refer to the book Using HP Telex for details.
