PC Failures
If the PC is inoperative and a user must reboot, this disconnects the PC
and the HP 3000 host, which results in a data communications failure.
Consequences of PC Failures
The consequences of PC failures depend on whether VPLUS/Windows on the PC
is attempting to send data to the PC or waiting to receive data from the
PC.
If VPLUS/Windows on the HP 3000 attempts to send data to the PC after the
disconnection, the error is detected and returned to the VPLUS
application in the same manner as for the loss of a port connection.
Refer to "Error Handling" in Chapter 2 for more information on errors
returned.
If VPLUS/Windows on the HP 3000 is waiting to receive data from the PC,
an indefinite waiting period can result. The HP 3000 system manager must
abort the I/O for the logical device so that VPLUS/Windows can detect the
problem. VPLUS then returns the same error to the application as for a
port connection loss. If the VPLUS/Windows session does not clear by
aborting the pending I/O, the hung session remains until the HP 3000
system manager reboots the HP 3000.
The HP 3000 system manager can minimize hung sessions by setting the
connection assurance interval of the HP 3000. The NS3000/XL NMMGR
Screens Reference Manual (36922-61003) provides information on setting
the connection assurance interval and specifying the maximum number of
connection assurance retransmissions.
Recovering From PC Failures
A user, with the help of the HP 3000 system manager, should perform the
following steps to recover from a PC failure:
1. Notify the HP 3000 system manager and identify the problem session
using the logon parameters of jobname, user, and account.
It is recommended that you use jobname if the logon user is not
unique. For clear identification, you can use the name assigned
to the PC within the network as jobname. When you define each
application with the Define Application command, you can use
jobname as part of the specified logon string.
2. Wait for the system manager to perform the following tasks before
proceeding to step 3.
a. Check for sessions that the inoperative PC created.
b. Abort pending I/Os if active sessions from the inoperative PC
exist. VPLUS/Windows cannot detect the failure until pending
I/Os are aborted.
c. Determine if a cable is disconnected or the PC is powered
down.
3. Reboot the PC and reload the network software.
4. Restart Microsoft Windows.
5. Restart the VPLUS/Windows presentation server.
6. Restart applications using the Start Application command from the
Action menu.
