COMMUNICATOR 3000 MPE MPE/iX RELEASE 4.0
New HP 3000 Corporate Business Systems
by Carl Evans
Commercial Systems Division
The new HP 3000 Corporate Business Systems are highly expandable, high
performance computers offering superior value and ease of use for their
performance class. The HP 3000 Corporate Business System 990 and 992/100
uniprocessors and the 2-, 3- and 4-way 992/200, 992/300 and 992/400
multiprocessors and field upgrade products are supported this release of
MPE/iX and later versions of the MPE/iX operating system.
POWERFUL MAINFRAME ALTERNATIVES The HP 3000 Corporate Business Systems
deliver mainframe performance, data center management functionality, and
high availability at a significantly lower cost of ownership than
traditional mainframes. The lowest priced system, the CS 990
uniprocessor, provides a low cost entry into the Corporate Business
System package and is not available in a multiprocessing version. The CS
990 is field upgradable to the higher performing 992/100 uniprocessor,
which itself is expandable to 2-, 3- and 4-way multiprocessing systems.
The 3-way multiprocessor 992/300 is expected to provide 20% greater
performance than the fastest IBM ES/9000 air-cooled computer, the 9121
Model 610. The 4-way multiprocessor 992/400 is expected to provide
performance throughput comparable to the midrange IBM ES/9000 9021 Model
740 water-cooled mainframe at 1/12 the initial purchase price and 1/5 the
3-year cost of ownership.
SIGNIFICANT GROWTH FOR THE CURRENT HIGH-END Current HP 3000 high-end
customers can increase system power and expandability by upgrading to the
Corporate Business System platform. The CS 990 offers an attractive
upgrade path for the Series 960, providing an expected performance boost
of greater than 70%. CS 992 systems are expected to provide close to 70%
greater performance than Series 980 systems with the same number of
processors. The HP 3000 Corporate Business System can also be considered
for consolidating two or more smaller HP 3000 systems.
GREATER CONNECTIVITY AND CONFIGURABILITY The HP 3000 Corporate Business
System with MPE/iX Release 4.0 increases terminal connectivity from 850
users on the Series 980 with XL Release 3.0 to 2300 users, and expands
mass storage disk capacity from 85 Gbytes to 690 Gbytes. The number of
total I/O slots offered in the system is 112 single-height, when
configured with the maximum 8 HP Precision Bus I/O card cages. Each card
cage supports 14 single-height cards. Maximum main memory support has
been doubled from 1 Gbyte on the Series 980 to 2 Gbytes. Standard memory
sizes are 192 Mbytes for the uniprocessor 990 and 992/100 systems and 256
for the multiprocessor 992/200, 992/300 and 992/400 systems.
CONVENIENT DATA CENTER SOLUTION The HP 3000 Corporate Business System
also comes in a DX version that offers a significant cost savings and
ordering simplicity as key benefits to you. The DX version of the
Corporate Business System includes:
* HP OpenView Console: a windows-based, color PC console that
features customizable, exceptions-based systems management through
highlighted icons.
* HP TurboSTORE/iX II: for online, unattended parallel backup for
rewritable optical disk, 1/2-inch tape, or DDS.
* HP AutoRestart/iX: automatic recovery management software for
operatorless system restart after a system software failure.
* HP GlancePlus, LaserRX/MPE and RXForecast: for performance
management, monitoring and capacity planning.
These additional products are provided standard with the Corporate
Business System DX at a reduced price from the line item cost, providing
a financial advantage to customers who choose the DX over the basic
system.
OPTIONAL FACTORY PRELOADING If a system disk and an integrated expansion
cabinet are ordered, you have the option to request factory preloading of
the Fundamental Operating Software (FOS) and all of the data center
software, excluding HP LaserRX/MPE rack external 9x7 peripherals to rack
selected peripherals and external I/O expansion. The product number,
A1884A, is the same as that for the 9x7, yet options for HP-Precision Bus
I/O card cages and HP-FL disk arrays have been added specifically for the
Corporate Business System customers. Existing Distributed Terminal
Controller, SCSI disk, and DDS options can also be ordered for the
Corporate Business System.
DESIGNED FOR THE FUTURE The Corporate Business Systems were designed from
inception to allow for future expandability and scalability. For
example, the Corporate Business System 99x has a virtual address
capability with an addressing range of 256 terabytes, allowing for
substantial expandability to meet growing software requirements. The
hardware has been designed to handle higher degrees of multiprocessing,
including 8- and 16-way, and to capitalize on emerging technologies such
as processor redundancy and fault tolerance.
