Introducing NetWare for the HP 3000

by Cliff Chew
Information Networks Division

NetWare for the HP 3000 provides PC services functionality from Novell
Inc. From a Novell NetWare client, the NetWare Services running on the
HP 3000 Series 900 looks identical to those running on a Novell NetWare
386 server. The services available with NetWare for the HP 3000 include:

   *   file and printer sharing

   *   server administration functions

   *   connection maintenance

   *   bindery facility

   *   print queue management

   *   accounting services

Novell developed Portable NetWare as a source code product that provides
native NetWare compatible distributed services to networks of PCs and
workstations when integrated into a host operating system. Portable
NetWare is part of the Novell plan to serve the needs of its customers
and to gain wider acceptance in the distributed services vendor
community.

With this MPE/iX release, HP has ported the Novell Portable NetWare to
the HP 3000 Series 900 systems running MPE/iX. Our goal is to provide
NetWare server capabilities on the HP 3000 for customers who currently
have native NetWare PC clients and servers, and HP 3000 Series 900
systems running MPE/iX and who want NetWare services on the HP 3000.
With NetWare for the HP 3000, NetWare clients can use NetWare
capabilities on the HP 3000 as well as on native NetWare servers.

NetWare for the HP 3000 is a fully certified implementation of Portable
NetWare 3.01. NetWare for the HP 3000 appears to a PC client as "normal,
well behaved" NetWare. All file-oriented NetWare Core Protocols (NCPs)
is fully supported in NetWare for the HP 3000. This includes file
maintenance, print services and queuing, service connection maintenance,
bindery facility, and accounting services. The figure on the following
page depicts a simple configuration that includes an HP 3000 Series 900
running NetWare for the HP 3000 and three HP Vectras running NetWare
client code. All four devices are connected by one LAN segment.

[]
Notice that there are no native NetWare servers in this environment. NetWare for the HP 3000 does not require another NetWare 286 or 386 server. Customers are not required to buy a NetWare client kit. NetWare for the HP 3000 product supplies the NetWare 3.01 client set, which includes floppies and manuals. NetWare for the HP 3000 product is supported over Ethernet v2.0, 802.3, and 802.5 (Token Ring) LANs only. The ThinLAN 3000/XL Link (HP 36923A) is a prerequisite product for NetWare for the HP 3000. The link must be configured (link name and link path) and started. The NS transport is not required to be configured and started. For those systems that can support one LAN card for both DTC and system traffic (currently HP`3000 Series 9x7 and below), the ThinLAN 3000/XL Link product is still required because of software dependencies. Features not supported by NetWare for the HP 3000 are: * The Novell Terminal Services. * Embedded value-added processes or embedded service protocol gateways. * NetWare loadable modules. * NetWare driver-level diagnostics for network management. (ThinLAN 3000/XL Link provides link-level and link-access diagnostics.)
NOTE Virtual Terminal services (VT) is available for NetWare PC clients with the HP Network Services 2.1/MS-DOS for NetWare (HP D1819A) product. This product provides network services over a TCP/IP stack for the NetWare PC client. HP Network Services 2.1/MS-DOS for NetWare is not included with the NetWare for the HP 3000 product and must be purchased separately.
