HP DeskMon: Administrator's Guide

Chapter 1 What Is DeskMon?

HP DeskMon is a software product designed to monitor the status of HP
DeskManager systems.

A copy of DeskMon resides on each machine that you wish to monitor. At
pre-configured times, DeskMon checks HP DeskManager for correct
operation. DeskMon also has the ability to do limited machine checking.
DeskMon will report irregularities to the System Administrator by either
outputting a message at a nominated console or printer, or by sending a
mail message to an HP DeskManager user. Reports may be sent to a remote
site for central monitoring of multiple computers.

DeskMon automatically performs the checks without operator intervention
at pre-configured time intervals, and has limited impact on host machine
performance. No changes have to be made to the existing HP DeskManager
configuration or database.

The Administrator configures the checks that they wish DeskMon to carry
out and then acts on any error conditions reported by DeskMon.

Configuration is carried out using the DeskMon Configurator. The
Configurator has the same "look and feel" as the HP DeskManager
Configurator. All changes to the DeskMon configuration are saved in the
file DMUPDATE.DESKMON.HPOFFICE. This file is similar to the BCREPORT file
generated by the HP DeskManager Configurator. The DMUPDATE file can be
used to automatically update the configuration of DeskMon on remote
machines.

Benefits of DeskMon
   * It is easy to install and configure.
   * Less time need be spent monitoring the HP DeskManager network.
   * Less technical knowledge is needed to effectively monitor the HP
       DeskManager network.
   * Potential problems can be identified before they become serious.
   * Problems can be resolved faster, leading to faster message
       delivery times.
   * DeskMon makes a minimal impact on machine performance.
   * Reporting on machines in the HP DeskManager network can be
       centralized.
