HP DeskMon: Administrator's Guide

How DeskMon Works

DeskMon runs in background on each machine, performing checks on HP
DeskManager at the pre-configured times. The following checks can be
made:

Job status--DeskMon will check that jobs relating to HP DeskManager are
running and are in a pre-defined state. DeskMon will only check those
jobs which it has been configured to check. A typical job status check
would be to check that the Supervisor job (SUPRVISR,MGR.HPOFFICE) is
running.

For Master Truck jobs, the Administrator is able to define how many
trucks are configured for a particular machine as this may vary from
machine to machine.

Mail status--DeskMon will check that the status of the mail processes on
each machine (as shown by the MAILSTATUS command) are in a pre-determined
state. An example of a Mail Status check would be to check that the
MAILROOM is running.

Mail queue--DeskMon will check that a build up of Urgent, Normal or
Deferred messages does not occur unnoticed. The DeskMon Configurator
allows you to specify different limits on each machine.

IPC files--DeskMon will check the IPC files used by HP DeskManager. (You
can also check IPC files used by applications other than HP DeskManager.)
IPC file information will include the name of the file along
with an acceptable limit. For example, DeskMon may check that
MRIPCIN.MAILDB.HPOFFICE does not have more than 100 records.

Dataset limits--DeskMon will check the current usage of the datasets to
ensure that they are not filling up. This is a common problem due to the
maintenance program reporting only the initial position of the usage, not
the "high-water mark".

Hanging trucks--MPE/V machines only. DeskMon will check the Mail Trucks
to ensure that they are not hung on a DS network call. This check cannot
be made on MPE/XL systems, because the check program executes in
compatibility mode.

STATS file exceptions--The HP DeskManager STATSFIL.MAILDB.HPOFFICE file
can be scanned at preset time intervals to check for a variety of error
conditions.

External applications--DeskMon can also invoke external programs, under
the DeskMon check process, to perform additional checks. DeskMon will
report any exceptions that are found.
