HP DeskMon: Administrator's Guide

Reporting

You will need to decide how you want your HP DeskManager network errors
and checks reported to you. Not all reports need be sent to the same
locations. For example you might decide that certain conditions need
only be reported locally, while others need to be reported both locally
and remotely, or only remotely.

DeskMon allows you set up a series of categories through which different
types of errors can be reported. Each of these reporting categories can
be any combination of the following:

   * Send a message to a local or remote operator console (through
       TELLOP).

   * Send a message to a local or remote printer (this has to be a
       dedicated DeskMon printer).

   * Send a message to a local or remote user through a logon id; for
       example MGR.HPOFFICE (through TELL).

   * Send an electronic mail message to an HP DeskManager user.

DeskMon also writes copies of all report messages to an audit
file--DMAUDIT.DESKMON.HPOFFICE.

If no errors are found, DeskMon can be configured to inform the
Administrator that the check was successful and the time the check was
performed.

For network monitoring, it is important that you use reporting categories
consistently so that the same kinds of errors are always reported to
similar locations. If you intend to use the remote update facility, you
also need to use the same names for reporting categories right across the
network (see Chapter 4 for further details).

For remote monitoring, you should also consider using a dedicated
printer. This has the advantages of:

   * Providing a hardcopy record of all messages.

   * Not being dependent on the HP DeskManager transport system.

Reporting by HP DeskManager messages should only be used sparingly as
this can result in the HP DeskManager database filling up, and is also
dependent on the performance of HP DeskManager. Thus, if HP DeskManager
is down on either the reporting machine or the user's machine, the
DeskMon report will be either delayed or never sent.

Time Scheduling

In addition to Report Categories, you need to decide how frequently you
want DeskMon to perform checks. Checks are performed at regular times
each day and can be anything from once per day to once every fifteen
minutes.

Checking can also be inhibited at certain times; for example you may wish
to turn checking off at night, or at times when no support is available.
