HP DeskMon: Administrator's Guide
Recommended Checks
This section lists some recommended checks that can be made with DeskMon.
The checks and values described are initial recommendations only--they
should be adjusted in the light of your experience with monitoring your
own HP DeskManager system.
Jobs Status
We recommend you check that the following HP DeskManager jobs are
executing:
SUPRVISR,MGR.HPOFFICE
MTRUCK0,MAILTRCK.HPOFFICE If you are running transport.
MTRUCK1,MAILTRCK.HPOFFICE }
MTRUCK2,MAILTRCK.HPOFFICE }
MTRUCK3,MAILTRCK.HPOFFICE } Only if you regularly run
. } multiple trucks.
. }
MTRUCKn,MAILTRCK.HPOFFICE }
Mail Processes
We recommend you check these processes:
MAILTELL
USERINT
TICKLER
MAILROOM
TMANAGER If you are running transport.
DSSLAVE
TROUTER HP DeskManager Version B.03 onwards, if you are using transport.
Optional processes to check are:
LIBRARY If you are using HP File/Library.
PCMAIL If you are using PC mail products such as AdvanceMail over an OfficeShare LAN.
INTRGMGR If you have the HP DeskManager Intrinsics.
EFT If you are using EFT applications.
FSCARPA If you are using FSC applications.
FSCAREF If you are using FSC applications.
X400 If you have an X.400 gateway.
Mail Queues
Queues depend on the amount of mail traffic, and you will probably have
your own goals for delivery times and so on.
If you do not have your own goals, you could consider using these values
to start with. These values should then be adjusted in the light of
experience:
Mail | Maximum | Oldest
Queue | Outstanding | Message
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Urgent - 3 - 30 minutes
Normal - 10 - 1 hour
Deferred - 10 - 12 hours
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All queues - 15 -
IPC Files
We recommended that you check:
MRIPCIN.MAILDB.HPOFFICE Check this is less than 100, depending on activity in your system.
ARPAIPC.MAILDB.HPOFFICE } Check these if you are using
AREFIPC.MAILDB.HPOFFICE } FSC. Values will depend on
ERRIPCIN.MAILDB.HPOFFICE } throughput and application.
Dataset Limits
Zero values on the Dataset Status screen will turn off the dataset check.
Recommended values are as follows:
Dataset | Value | Notes
| |
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
| |
Item-Header | 75% | Performance starts to degrade above this value.
| |
Item-Structure | 90% | Dependent on the size of database. Normally in the
| | range 90% to 99%. Use 90% for small databases.
| | Use a higher value for larger databases.
| |
Item-Content | 90% |

External Applications
DeskMon provides a facility to invoke external programs to perform
additional monitoring under the DeskMon checking process.
External Application checks are a method of expanding the flexibility of
DeskMon, allowing external applications to run and return results that
can be included in the DeskMon reporting process. These user supplied
programs perform checks and set a JCW (Job Control Word). If the JCW
does not equal zero, DeskMon sends an error message to its reporting
process. See Chapter 7 for further details.
Hung Master Trucks (MPE/V machines only)
If this option is chosen from the System Details screen, the HP
DeskManager Master Trucks will be checked to ensure they are not hung on
a DataComm request. This check can only be made for MPE/V systems and
cannot be made on MPE/XL systems.
STATS File Exceptions
If the STATS file option is chosen from the System Details screen, the HP
DeskManager STATSFIL.MAILDB.HPOFFICE file will be scanned at preset
intervals to check for any of the following errors:
Number - Event - Error
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5 | 1 | Slave Trucks were not
| | enabled on the remote
| | computer.
5 | 3 | Slave Trucks on remote
| | computer aborted/abandoned.
6 - 0 - Mailnode made unavailable.
10 | 0 | Invalid password given for
| | user.
11 - 1 - DS error - POPEN failed.
11 - 2 - DS error - PWRITE failed.
11 - 3 - DS error - CLOSE failed.
11 - 4 - DS error - BYE failed.
11 - 5 - DS error - OPEN failed.
11 - 6 - DS error - HELLO failed.
12 | 0 | Wrong location given by Mail
| | Truck.
14 | 0 | Unknown mailnode on target
| | computer.
17 - 0 - Illegal route.
19 - 1 - EFT/FSC fail.
19 - 2 - EFT/FSC message fail.
19 - 3 - EFT route fail.
23 - 1 - FSC error - database full.
23 | 3 | FSC error - entry/format
| | type not recognized.
23 | 5 | FSC error - request to stop
| | all processes.
23 - 99 - FSC error - other error.
26 | 0 | Masquerading NS Master Truck
| | detected
27 | 1 | NS Master Truck error
| | detected connecting to
| | computer
27 | 2 | NS Master Truck failed
| | validation
Either all or none of these checks can be performed. If required,
entries with nothing in the comment field can be ignored (see
DMPREVENTNULLCOMMENT in Appendix B).
NOTE This option requires that the STATSFIL file is not circular. You
can ensure that the file is built correctly by setting the DESKMON
JCW to "ON" in the MAILMNT2.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE file. See "LogScan"
in Appendix D.
