You may choose to configure backup devices so that they are
automatically assigned to users. This is also referred to as auto
reply. When devices are configured for automatic assignment, the
system automatically answers media requests for you.
Devices configured for automatic assignment must have the following
characteristics:
The device mode must be R (autoreply).
The device must not be job or data accepting.
The device must not be assigned to another user.
The device specification must be unique. You must use the device
specification (logical device number or unique device class) in a
FILE command describing the device.
The user must request an unlabeled media.
Refer to System Startup, Configuration, and Shutdown Reference Manual (32650-90042) for instructions for configuring devices.
In order for the system to automatically assign a correctly configured device,
the user (or you, if you are storing or restoring files yourself) must name the
device and its LDEV number (or device class, if the device class is unique) in
a FILE command preceding the STORE command, and the device must not be
assigned to any other user. If a device cannot be automatically assigned, you
must assign the device in the standard manner. Instructions for using the
FILE and STORE commands can be found in Chapter 5, "Storing Files."
