Most problems can be diagnosed and/or resolved quickly at
the device (terminal or serial printer). It's best to do
simple verifications before using TermDSM for more involved diagnostics.
First, note the following:
How many devices are affected?
Which devices are affected?
The number and proximity of devices affected provides a clue
to the cause. If all devices are affected, the fault is likely to
be with the system. If several devices on a DTC are affected, the
DTC is suspect. If all devices on a DTC are down, the DTC or LAN
might be at fault.
If only one device is affected, the fault is likely in that
device, the device cable, or the DTC components (hardware or software)
that serve the device. If only one device is affected, verify that:
The serial interface is connected.
The power cord is connected and is powered on.
If the device is "hung" (the port is not
responding), do the following:
Check that the device is in remote mode.
Attempt a soft reset. Press [SHFT]-Reset.
Attempt a hard reset. Press [CTRL]-Reset.
If the device is not hung, but transmission or reception is
"garbled", check that speed and parity sensing
is enabled. Also check that the XON/XOFF protocol is enabled. If
the user cannot logon, check that the device is configured correctly.
