COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL Release 1.2, Version A.20.10

Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION

XL Release 1.2 Overview

by Myrna Allen--Commercial Systems Division

The Commercial Systems XL Release 1.2 introduces several new products and
contains performance enhancements to many existing products. This
commercial release will provide an increase in the performance,
functionality, and reliability of the MPE XL Operating System.

SYSTEM INFORMATION

With MPE XL Release 1.2, the system startup options for determining
NORECOVERY or RECOVERY have changed to accommodate saving spoolfiles.

SEGMENTER now creates program and segmented library files which are
compatible with those created on MPE V/E based systems. This allows MPE
V/E compatible source files to be compiled on MPE XL based systems.

RLFILE, a new compiler directive, has been added to COBOLII/XL, FORTRAN
77/XL, and Pascal/XL. This compiler feature allows the Link Editor/XL to
manipulate procedures similar to the SEGMENTER on MPE V/E.

AUTOINST/XL has been enhanced to include an Add-On feature. You may now
add products to your system without performing a full update or
installation, thus shortening system down time.

New features have also been added to Native Language Support (NLS) and
the MPE XL Release 1.2 version of STORE.

DATA COMMUNICATIONS

NS Point-to-Point 3000/XL Network Link provides the first HP-to-HP area
networking on the MPE XL system. Using gateways and gateway-halves,
internet communication is now possible between MPE XL systems, as well as
between MPE XL and MPE V/E systems.

NetDelivery/XL, a network distributed application service is now
available on XL. NetDelivery/XL provides a message and file delivery
system for HP AdvanceNet networks. This new product includes the
following features: message queues, distribution lists, location
transparency, forwarding event scheduling, and message logging.

The Distributed Terminal Subsystem (DTS) provides asynchronous device
connectivity for terminals and serial printers. Two major product
enhancements are included in this release: Printer Type 26 for network
printers, and typeahead for inputting data before a read is actually
posted.

LANGUAGES

With this release, the MPE XL Compiler Library introduces procedures for
performing basic operations on packed-decimal numbers. Replacements are
also provided for LONGDIVD and DIVD. These decimal routines were part of
the compiler library under MPE V/E, but not MPE XL.

RPG/XL, the Native Mode Compiler and run-time library for the RPG
language, is now available on MPE XL. Except for minor differences,
RPG/XL is a direct replacement for the RPG/V compiler.

Both HP Pascal and FORTRAN77/XL have been enhanced. HP Pascal now offers
improved compatibility with the current versions of HP Pascal/UX and HP
9000/300 Pascal. FORTRAN77/XL has increased its compatibility with
FORTRAN66/V, HP 1000 FORTRAN77, and the DEC/VMS implementation of
FORTRAN77 through HP 3000, DEC/VMS, and HP 1000 extensions.

The new version of HP COBOLII/XL supports the full HIGH level of the ANSI
85 COBOL Standard. This version also contains increased functionality.
In addition, the COBOL 68 compiler product was obsoleted on May 1, 1987.

SOFTWARE PRODUCTS

This release introduces HP EDIT/XL. HP EDIT/XL, a full-screen text editor
designed for application development, offers a user-definable interface,
macro command definitions, "undo" capability, built-in recovery
procedures, and an online Help facility.

HP WordServices, a new host based formatter, is invoked from within HP
Word/PC. HP WordServices expands word processing functionality, provides
integration with HP 3000 files, and the allows you to print to large
system printers.

HP ALLBASE/4GL is an advanced fourth-generation language now available on
MPE XL systems. HP ALLBASE/4GL improves the productivity of application
developers and reduces application maintenance through a single
integrated environment including design, development, testing,
implementation, and maintenance.

This release introduces a new tool, HP Software Revision Controller (HP
SRC/XL). HP SRC/XL is especially useful for tracking files that are
frequently modified, but whose revision history must be preserved. This
new tool can significantly reduce the problems associated with revision
control.

The Cooperative Services PC development tool provides a process for
accessing HP 3000 resident data using transaction-based applications on
the PC. Cooperative Services features include TurboIMAGE intrinsic
support, MPE intrinsic support, and remote procedure call support.

Silhouette has been enhanced to use the Network Inter-Process
Communication (NetIPC) and Remote Process Management (RPM) services of
NS/3000. This new feature provides more protection of data and easier
recovery for Secondary system failures.

Information Access/XL enhancements have been made to MPE file support,
database administration, PC data sources, window support, and officeshare
support. The existing feature set has been improved to include changes
to the Host Data Server Process (HDSP), the Administrator Utility, the
Host Batch Facility, and the PC software.

The latest version of HP DeskManager has been enhanced to provide 16-bit
language support, programmatic access to HP`DeskManager through HP
DeskManager Intrinsics, and electronic mail connectivity using an X.400
gateway. In addition, several additional miscellaneous enhancements have
been added which increase the functionality of this new release.

HP DeskManager Intrinsics, a subset of HP DeskManager, extends the
Application Integration capabilities of HP DeskManager. The HP
DeskManager Intrinsics consists of three distinct sets of intrinsics:
user, gateway, and supporting. These intrinsics create and control the
driver process which performs the intrinsic functions.

Compatibility mode Decision Support Graphics (DSG) intrinsics are
available with this release. These intrinsics allow programmatic access
to all DSG functions.

The latest version of HP BRW/XL includes the following enhancements: new
output screen, new HP Business BASIC floating-point Decimal type,
double-quotes in strings, integration with HP Information Access, and
support of user-defined data dictionary.

TRANSFORM/V is now available in compatibility mode on the HP 3000 Series
900 computers installed with the MPE XL operating system. Some key
features of TRANSFORM/V include: transportation of IBM source libraries
and data files to the HP 3000, translation of IBM source code to
compatible HP 3000 source code, and conversion of IBM data files to
compatible HP 3000 data files.

This release also includes enhancements to HPToolset/XL, TDP, MCONTEXT,
PROCMON/V, and the graphics library AGL.

DATABASE TOOLS

This release introduces ALLBASE/NET. This product allows applications on
one MPE XL machine to access ALLBASE HP SQL DBEnvironments on another MPE
XL machine through a Local Area Network (LAN).

A new version of ALLBASE/XL contains several features absent from
previous versions including locking enhancements, intent update locking,
section caching, and preprocessors for C and FORTRAN.
