Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION

MPE XL

by Korak Mitra--Commercial Systems Division

MPE XL, version A.01.10, is the Production Release of the new
Hewlett-Packard advanced commercial operating system. Designed to
control the next generation of HP Precision Architecture processors, MPE
XL provides source code and object code compatibility with applications
designed for the MPE V operating system. Built on the foundation of MPE
V, MPE XL extends the boundaries of operating system capabilities through
greater performance and capacity, higher availability and reliability,
and enhanced ease of use and functionality.

LANGUAGES

Along with advanced operating system capabilities, MPE XL delivers
several new Native Mode and Compatibility Mode compilers. Taking full
advantage of the HP Precision Architecture hardware, the Native Mode
optimizing compilers include: C/XL, COBOL II/XL, FORTRAN 77/XL, and HP
Pascal/XL. Providing complete MPE V object code compatibility, the
Compatibility Mode compilers include: SPL/V, RPG/V, HP Business BASIC/V,
Transact/V, COBOL II/V, FORTRAN 66/V, FORTRAN 77/V, BASIC/V, and
Pascal/V. With this combination of compilers, you can use a HP Precision
Architecture processor for both MPE V and MPE XL cross-program
development.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

MPE XL also delivers TurboIMAGE/XL, which provides maximum Native Mode
performance while maintaining full source code compatibility for your
database applications. Also available are all of your familiar program
development tools including: KSAM/V, DBChange/V, Inform/V, Query/V,
Dictionary/V, Report/V, and VPLUS/V. Additional tools in Native Mode
include: TOOLSET/XL, HP Symbolic Debugger, and System Dictionary/XL as
well as the new Hewlett-Packard relational database technology,
ALLBASE/XL HP SQL. Through this array of information management tools,
Hewlett-Packard continues to enhance programmer and end-user
productivity.

DATA COMMUNICATIONS

In data communications, MPE XL delivers the Distributed Terminal
Controller, which provides flexible local area network-based workstation
connectivity. This industry standard 802.3 LAN connectivity frees you
from rewiring terminal-to-system connections when expanding or moving.
MPE XL also delivers LAN-based NS/XL services, which include: network
file transfer, remote database access, remote file access, and virtual
terminal capabilities.

For wide-area networking capabilities at this production release, MPE XL
supports the use of MPE V processors as data communications servers. By
using an MPE V processor on the same LAN as the MPE XL processor,
Hewlett-Packard provides X.25, point-to-point modem, point-to-point
hardwired, SNA and Bisynch wide-area communications. This option is made
financially attractive through aggressive rental programs on MPE V data
communications servers.

OFFICE AUTOMATION

At this production release, MPE XL delivers several office automation
products including: TDP/V, SPELL/V, and Advance Link. In addition, MPE
XL provides Printer Support Package for the Hewlett-Packard 2680A and
2688A system laser printers, as well as IDS/IFS support. Through these
host-based and through other pc-based office automation products, you can
continue to move the benefits of automation closer to the end-users.

ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTATION

As part of this MPE XL system production release, you will receive a
number of manuals addressing migration, system management, data
communications, and other issues. Built on the base MPE V manual set,
these MPE XL manuals have been expanded and enhanced for maximum
effectiveness. To help you selectively focus on the appropriate manuals
to read first, Hewlett-Packard provides a road map into the manual set.
See the Documentation and Terminology Guide (P/N 5958-9511) for details.

NEW SECTION TO THE COMMUNICATOR

The Communicator now contains a new section with more technical detail.
For those times when more in-depth information is needed by your
programming staff, but is not necessarily relevant to the general reader,
the new TECHNICAL ARTICLES section was created. When detailed technical
information is available on a product, an article will appear in the new
TECHNICAL ARTICLES section.
