Micro Focus COBOL for UNIX COBOL User Guide

Appendix B Your Environment

Your COBOL product works in as similar a way as possible under each of
the DOS, Windows and OS/2 v1.x operating systems, while making each
operating system's full facilities available to you. You can readily
exploit the similar operation by starting development of an application
in one environment and completing development in a different one.
However, the DOS environment might be a native one or it might be an
emulation that runs under Windows, OS/2 or Windows NT. The OS/2 v1.x
environment might be a native one or it might be an emulation that runs
under OS/2 v2.x or Windows NT.

This appendix explains some of the differences that you need to be aware
of if you are writing more advanced COBOL programs that explicitly access
environment-specific facilities such as operating system support
routines. Most COBOL developers will not need to be aware of these
differences as the COBOL system will automatically take care of them.
