Designing the Workgroups

Workgroups are groups of users with similar needs. When you plan shared
discs and shared printers with workgroups in mind, you can simplify the
configuration and setup procedures you need to do later.

A typical workgroup might consist of 5 to 30 users linked on a network.
Workgroups should be formed based on their need to access specific files
or to print to a particular type of printer.

Spend some time with each network user to determine the best organization
for the workgroups.

When planning shared discs for the workgroup, consider the following:

   * Types of application and data files

   *   Frequency of duplication

   * Update, backup, and security requirements

When planning shared printers, consider:

   *   Types of documents

   *   Print frequency

   *   Print volume

   *   Graphics requirements

   *   Printer location

Figure 2-1 illustrates two workgroups using local and HP 3000
components in a Resource Sharing environment.

You can use one HP 3000 Server Worksheet to plan each of your workgroups.
There are two blank worksheets at the end of this chapter you can use to
make additional copies for your planning needs.
