Sharing HP 3000 Printers [ HP Resource Sharing for MPE/iX ] MPE/iX 5.0 Documentation
HP Resource Sharing for MPE/iX
Sharing HP 3000 Printers
With System Manager (SM) or Node Manager (NM) capabilities, you can
enable shares of printers connected to the HP 3000 with the SHAREDEVICE
command, or by choosing Share f2, then choosing Share Device f2.
In addition to sharing printers, RESMGR lets you configure formatters,
environment files, priority, and number of copies for each printer.
To share HP 3000 printers:
1. Access the RESMGR main screen, then choose Share f2.
2. Choose Share Device f2.
RESMGR prompts:
Sharename ('//' to cancel)?
3. Enter a sharename for the device that will help you identify it,
for example, JOEPRINT.
RESMGR prompts:
MPE LDEV number or device class ('//' to cancel)?
4. Enter an MPE class name or device number (LDEV#). If you enter an
invalid class name or LDEV#, the prompt will reappear, along with
a message telling you that an LDEV# or class name is required.
RESMGR prompts:
Password (optional)?
5. Enter a password, or press Enter if you don't want to set one. Do
not use invalid characters in the password ( [ ] \ / * ).
RESMGR prompts:
Do you want to customize your printer configuration (Y/N)?
6. If you do not want to configure a formatter, environment file,
document priority or number of copies for this device, enter N.
If you want to configure a formatter, environment file, document
priority or number of copies, enter Y, and go to the appropriate
section on the following pages.
If you entered N, RESMGR tells you:
Sharename name has been added to the network.
The configured device is now available to users on the network. If you
later need to change this share information, use the MODIFYSHARE command.
You can also change the formatter, environment file, output priority, and
number of copies with the MODIFYSHARE command.
NOTE If you have more than one device with the same class name, RESMGR
won't know which device to use. If this is the case, we recommend
you associate the sharename with an LDEV# rather than a device
class name.

Configuring a Formatter
A formatter is a program on the HP 3000 that translates code or escape
sequences within the application output file into printer control
instructions. For instance, you can use a formatter to convert word
processing program output or to convert 16-bit print characters so that
they print properly on your printer.
Formatters can be associated with devices. Whenever a device has a
formatter associated with it, Resource Sharing will use the formatter
whenever that device is used.
To configure a formatter:
If you want to configure a formatter for a device, first follow steps 1-5
described in the previous procedure, "To share HP 3000 printers." Then
continue with these steps. RESMGR prompts:
Do you want to customize your printer configuration (Y/N)?
1. Enter Y.
RESMGR prompts:
What do you want to configure?
1) Configure document formatter.
2) Configure document environment file.
3) Configure document priority and number of copies.
Enter choice (1, 2, or 3):
2. Choose option 1.
RESMGR prompts:
Formatter Name:
3. Enter the name of the formatter file, for example,
FORMATA.PPC.SYS.
If the formatter filename you entered does not exist, RESMGR
prompts:
The file does not exist. Do you want to use it anyway (Y/N)?
If you entered the name correctly and want to continue, enter Y.
If you entered the name incorrectly, enter N.
RESMGR prompts:
Options:
4. The Options field is formatter-specific data, and depends on the
design of the formatter. It is a maximum of 32 bytes. Refer to
the documentation that came with your formatter. Some formatters
might use this field for defining output priority or number of
copies. If you don't want to add any options, press Enter.
RESMGR prompts:
When should the formatter execute?
1) Execute formatter immediately.
2) Execute formatter as part of a job stream.
3) Execute formatter as a part of a scheduled
job stream.
Enter choice (1, 2, or 3):
5. Enter the number of your choice:
* Option 1 executes the formatter as a "son" process, meaning
that it will execute immediately whenever this sharename
receives a print request.
* Option 2 executes the formatter as part of a job stream.
You will be asked for the job input priority.
* Option 3 executes the formatter as a scheduled job stream.
You will be asked for the job input priority and the time
to start the job (0000 = midnight). Each print request to
this sharename will generate a separate job scheduled to
start at the specified time. Since this could result in
numerous jobs starting at the same time, the MPE job limit
will control how many can execute at once.
Configuring an Environment File
Environment files are used to specify a type font to be associated with a
device.
To configure an environment file:
If you want to associate a printer sharename with an environment file,
first follow steps 1-5 described in the previous procedure, "To share HP
3000 printers." Then continue with these steps.
2. Choose option 2.
RESMGR prompts:
Environment Filename:
If the environment filename you entered does not exist, RESMGR
prompts:
The file does not exist. Do you want to use it anyway (Y/N)?
If you entered the name correctly and want to continue, enter Y.
If you entered the name incorrectly, enter N.
3. Enter the name of the environment file, such as ELITE.HPENV.SYS.
RESMGR prompts:
Number of copies (min = 1, max = 65535, default = 1)?
4. Enter the number of copies you want printed or press Enter to
accept the default value of 1.
RESMGR prompts:
Document output priority (min = 0, max = 14, default = 8)?
5. Enter the output priority or press Enter ''to accept the default
value of 8.
The device will be added to the network with the environment file
associated with it.
Configuring Priority and Copies
You can also associate a device sharename with an output priority and
number of copies.
To configure priority and copies:
To configure priority and number of copies, complete steps 1 - 5
described in "To share HP 3000 printers" earlier in this chapter, then
follow these steps.
RESMGR prompts:
Do you want to customize your printer configuration (Y/N)?
1. Enter Y.
RESMGR prompts:
What do you want to configure?
1) Configure document formatter.
2) Configure document environment file.
3) Configure document priority and number of copies.
Enter choice:
2. Choose option 3.
RESMGR prompts:
Number of copies (min = 1, max = 65535, default = 1)?
3. Enter the number of copies you want to print or press Enter to
accept the default value of 1.
RESMGR prompts:
Document output priority (min = 0, max = 14, default = 8)?
4. Enter the output priority or press Enter to accept the default
value of 8.
The device will be added to the network with the output priority and
number of copies you designated.
NOTE If you have assigned a formatter to a device and you also need to
define the print priority and number of copies for the device, you
may be able to use the Options field, described in the the
documentation that came with your formatter.
To verify the device status and the printer configuration:
Enter the following command at the SHARE> prompt:
STATUS PRINTINFO
RESMGR displays a list of device information, including sharename,
classname, formatter, options, job priority, start time, environment
file, number of copies, and document priority.
Press CTRLY to cancel the display.
Here is an example of the Status Print Info display:
