HP ARPA File Transfer Protocol User's Guide
Who Should Use this Manual
This manual is intended for MPE XL users who want to transfer files
between MPE XL and other HP and non-HP systems that support the FTP
service.
FTP User
The MPE XL FTP user (the client) enters FTP user commands from the MPE XL
system. The remote host (remote FTP server) responds with messages and
data such as files and directories, requested by the FTP user as shown in
Figure 1-2 below.
If you are using FTP for the first time, review the FTP user commands in
Chapter 2 then go to Chapter 3 and follow the Simple Session example.
To perform specific FTP tasks such as changing remote directories, or
transferring files, see Chapter 4 for a detailed task-oriented approach
to using FTP.

FTP Server
If you access the MPE XL system from a remote host using FTP, you are
accessing the FTP server as in Figure 1-3 below. For example, if you
want to transfer files using FTP between two MPE XL systems, you would be
accessing the remote MPE XL system as an FTP server.
Chapter 5, Using the FTP Server, provides information for remote users
accessing the MPE XL FTP server.

Before Using FTP
In order to use FTP, your network administrator must have the network and
the FTP server up and running. The remote host you wish to access must
be connected to your network and also have an ARPA FTP service running.
You should have some understanding of the remote file system you want to
access.
To use FTP you will need the following from your network administrator
for each system you are accessing:
* Remote internet protocol (IP) address and/or NS node name
* User logon accounts and passwords
