Tailoring the Main Menu

You can tailor the Main Menu which is displayed when users first sign on
to HP Desk, that is, displayed after:

     Joanne PECK signed on.
Sign on recorded at 1510 on 11.11.92.
Last signed off 1135 on 21.11.92.

                 6 messages have been received
You have no appointments or ToDo items today

The menu supplied by Hewlett-Packard is simply a list of commands that
take the user to the different areas of HP Desk:

     HPDESKMANAGER 11.11.91 1510

     Joanne PECK Location: USCORP/LE

Type a number, an area name or press a function key for the area
     you want.

          1 Intray 5 Listarea 9 Signon Again
          2 Outtray 6 Filing Cabinet 10 Admin
          3 Pendingtray 7 Calendar (Diary) 11 Applications
4 Workarea 8 Signoff (Leave HP Desk)

Type HELP for information or type ? for a list of valid commands.
Type LEARNDESK for training on HPDESK

The easiest way in which you can tailor the Main Menu is by adding or
deleting items from it. You can replace the Main Menu with a completely
different menu, showing any text or commands you wish, or even the
company name or logo. This is because the Main Menu is not read by HP
Desk -- it is simply displayed to users as a reminder.

However, if you want the menu to retain function key references, remember
that the selections in the default Main Menu (1 through to 11) correspond
to the HP Desk numeric commands 1 through to 11. For an HP Desk user,
pressing function key f1 issues the command 1 which is the same as the
INTRAY command, pressing f2 issues the command 2 which is the same as
the OUTTRAY command, and so on.

If you want these function key selections to reference different
commands, you must write abbreviations for these numeric commands to make
them issue the command string you desire. (See Chapter 8 for how to
write abbreviations, and Chapter 3 for information on how to tailor
function keys.)

If MAINMENU.MAILCONF exists (or is file-equated), this file will be
displayed instead of the normal Main Menu which is held in the message
catalog. It again should be an 80 byte ASCII file. An example file can
be found in MAINMENU.MAILLIB.HPOFFICE.

There are two ways to tailor the Main Menu:

   1. Tailor an example file. There is an example Main Menu provided to
make it easy to adapt to your needs.

          a. Use a text editor, such as TDP/3000, to edit the file
MAINMENU in the MAILLIB group of the HPOFFICE account.

          b. The example file is an USASCII text file, and you can put
anything you like in the file and it can be any length.

          c. To install the file, copy it into the MAILCONF group of the
HPOFFICE account, retaining the filename MAINMENU.

   2. Work from new. Alternatively, you can create an USASCII text file
named MAINMENU in MAILCONF group of the HPOFFICE account.

There are four parameters that are available which can be used in the
layout:

Parameter number - Parameter function
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        1 - User's name
        2 - User's mailnode
        3 - Date
        4 - Time

These can be placed anywhere in the file, and are denoted by placing an
exclamation mark (!) in front of the parameter number, for example "!2".

If you wish to use the "!" character in the Main Menu then use a "!0" in
the file. (Note that using the "!" character on its own will make HP
Desk assume a parameter placement and substitute parameters in sequence.
That is, if you use "!1" in your file and later use a "!" character on
its own, HP Desk will automatically substitute the mailnode for the "!".
If all the parameters have been used, then a "!" on its own will be
ignored and not displayed. The example MAINMENU file demonstrates how
the parameters can be used.)
