Configuring a Gateway for HP Telex

If you have HP Telex installed on your system, this section explains how
to link it into HP Desk via an FSC gateway. HP Desk views the
international telex network as just a particular foreign service to which
a gateway could be configured. However, the integration of HP Telex with
HP Desk enables this foreign service connection to be established without
the need of additional application programs.

The integration of HP Telex into your HP Desk system requires:

* Configuration of HP Desk for HP Telex. This involves the
configuration of a hierarchically addressed remote location for
sending telexes, the configuration of an FSC gateway to HP Telex,
and the configuration of routes to the location.

* Configuration of HP Telex for HP Desk. The general configuration
of HP Telex is explained in the manual Administrator's Guide to HP
Telex II. However, since the configuration of HP Desk and HP Telex
are closely related, the specific configuration of HP Telex to HP
Desk is described here.

Configuring HP Telex for HP Desk

The first task is to define specified parts of HP Desk as one or more HP
Telex departments. HP Telex users are grouped into departments, and each
department may be given the use of different telex lines, print devices,
and passwords. Any HP Desk sublocation, or the whole HP Desk network,
can be defined as an HP Telex department.

The second task is to determine the facilities available to each of those
departments.

Care must be taken to ensure that HP Telex is configured in accordance
with local/national PTT regulations. Your HP Telex installation is
approved for the transmission and reception of telexes originated at, or
addressed to, your own site. However, the regulations may limit, or even
prohibit, the reception of telexes for onward distribution to remote
sites by a private network. Similarly, the collection from remote sites
of messages by a private network for onward transmission by telex may by
restricted or banned. The PTT regulations are likely to be most
restrictive when the private network extends across national borders.

You should investigate the situation with respect to your own HP Telex
installation carefully, and allow access to it by remote sites in your
network only in accordance with your findings.

To configure HP Desk to connect to the telex network, use the
Configurator, which displays the screens described in Chapter 12 .

How to configure HP Desk for HP Telex

1. Run the Configurator by typing MAILCONFIG.

2. At the Location Information screen, configure the telex network
as an HP Desk location. The location code must be unique in
the network.

3. At the Hierarchically Addressed Locations screen, specify the
location as remote and hierarchically addressed.

4. Ensure that the Administrator of any remote computer hosting a
mailnode configured as an HP Telex department is aware of the
location code assigned to the telex network through your
gateway. Each Administrator must also configure a route to the
gateway.

5. At the Foreign Service Connection/External File Transfer
screen, configure a gateway to HP Telex, as follows:

a. You may find it convenient to relate the Gateway name to
the location code used for the telex network that the
gateway serves. For example, if you call the telex
location TELEX2, you may choose to call the gateway to
it HPTELEX2.

b. The format of messages should be ARPA format
(compressed), unless you want the complete HP Desk
distribution list to be preserved in outgoing telexes.
In this case, specify ARPA format , but remember
that HP Desk Distribution Lists can be long and
will then be transmitted in full, at significant
cost.

c. The connecting IPC file is built by HP Telex in the HP
Telex group of the HPOFFICE account. You must specify
the name as:

TELRECV.HPTELEX.HPOFFICE

d. The foreign system gateway reference name must be left
blank.

6. At the Route Information screen, specify a route between the
mailnode you gave the telex network and the gateway you
configured.

7. If there's no Default User already configured for the local
system, go to the Data Information screen and specify
one.

Configuring HP Telex Departments
________________________________________________________________________

How to configure HP Telex departments:

1. The Department Name can contain up to nine characters. By
typing HP Desk here, you can configure the whole HP Desk
network as a single department, with all HP Desk users having
access to HP Telex facilities. Alternatively, you can
configure individual HP Desk mailnodes as departments, by
typing a full mailnode address. Location and sublocation codes
must be separated by a slash.

You can even combine these approaches. For example, you might
configure the whole HP Desk network as one department,
and your local mailnodes as separate departments. This
would allow you to allocate a departmental printer to the
local nodes and a separate printer to the rest of the
network.

2. Associated Telex Lines can be any selection of the lines
available to HP Telex, which can handle up to 8 lines, each
with its own number.

3. An Associated Print Device for Outgoing Telexes must be
specified for each department. All outgoing telexes are
printed on a printer, which may be allocated to one department
or shared.

4. Suppress Headers on Telex can be chosen to suppress the headers
from any given department. Unless otherwise arranged, HP Telex
generates a header for each outgoing telex, which comprises a
computer telex reference, the name of the addressee, and the
name of the sender. Many telex networks and agencies do not
accept these headers.

5. Passwords have no significance within HP Desk, since an HP Desk
user of HP Telex can only send and receive telexes. However,
any departments created for HP Desk, and passwords allocated to
them, can be used with HP Telex outside of HP Desk. So by
allocating passwords and limiting knowledge of them to
individuals, you can limit access to the HP Telex facilities to
some degree.
________________________________________________________________________

The Level 1 password allows the user to compose and send telexes; to read
and use the HP Telex directory, but not to amend it; and to read the HP
Telex output queue, but not amend it. The Level 2 password gives the
user the capabilities of Level 1, plus the ability to: update the
directory, resubmit or delete telexes in the output or printer queues, or
read the HP Telex log file. All HP Desk users sending messages through
HP Telex are considered to be Level 1 users. If, as possible, the HP HP
Telex Administrator configures the requirement for all Level 1 users to
include an answerback code in their telex addresses, all users must
comply.

You allow or deny facilities to the HP Desk users of an HP Telex node,
throughout the network, at the HP Desk Configuration Menu of the HP Telex
Configurator.

Configuring HP Desk for HP Telex

How to configure HP Telex for HP Desk

1. Route Incoming Telexes to HP Desk (Y/N) Responding Y
specifies that all incoming telexes are to be passed to HP
Desk. Telexes with the correct routing sequence and
valid HP Desk names/addresses are delivered to the In
Trays of local users or forwarded to remote users. Those
telexes with an invalid routing sequence or invalid HP Desk
names/addresses are passed to the Default User for the
gateway.

All incoming telexes are printed before being passed to HP
Desk. They are printed either on the printer associated with
the particular telex line or, if the appropriate routing
sequence is present, on the printer allocated to the specified
HP Telex department.

2. Can HP Desk Users Send Telexes (Y/N)? Responding Y means that
any user on an HP Desk node that's defined as an HP Telex
department can address messages to telex subscribers - that is,
send telexes. Responding N prevents all HP Desk users sending
telexes from HP Desk.

3. HPDesk Location Name used by HPTelex Type a location code.
This is shown to HP Desk recipients as the address of the
recognized sender of an incoming telex. For example:

Sender: BOB FISHER / TELEX/??

This shows clearly from which telex node the telex was
received and prevents any attempt to reply to the sender
at that address since TELEX/?? is not a valid HP Desk
address.
________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

4. Routing Sequence for Incoming Telexes This is defined by the
Beginning and End parameters. The code entered in the
Beginning field acts as a trigger to facilitate the delivery of
telexes to the In Trays of the addressees listed below it. The
list of addresses is terminated by the symbol entered in the
End field. Telex subscribers sending to HP Desk users should
be encouraged to use this routing sequence. Failure to do so
results in the telex being delivered to the Default User for
the gateway, rather than to the In Trays of the HP Desk
addresses.

The complete sequence, which may be placed anywhere in the
text, is:

Format Example

Routing Sequence (Beginning) HPHP [Subject]
Name1 [/mailnode1] HANK MARVIN / BQ1600/02
Name2 [/mailnode2] JOE FARMER
- - - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - - - -
Name [/mailnoden] CHERRY PIZE / BQD600/02
[ :Distribution List] :ACCOUNTS
Routing Sequence (End)
Sendername . BOB FISHER

The Routing Sequence (Beginning) defaults to HPHP but may be
any sequence of up to 10 characters. The Routing Sequence
(End) defaults to a period (.) but again can be configured as
any sequence of up to 10 characters. The Routing Sequence
(End) may be replaced by a blank line. In this case, the
sender is not identified and is shown in an HP Desk user's In
Tray as Unknown Sender.

Any characters on the same line as, and immediately following
the Routing Sequence (Beginning) are recognized as the subject

, whenever a message is sent to one or more telex subscribers,
a message to confirm the successful transmission of the message
to each telex number will appear in the originator's In
Tray.

If you respond N here, no such "successful" messages will appear in the
In Tray, but originators can still set acknowledgments on their messages.
In this case, the originator will receive a Level 2 (received)
acknowledgment in their Pending Tray, for each telex address to which the
message is successfully transmitted.

Failure to deliver a message to any addressed telex subscriber's number
is reported by a message in the HP Desk originator's In Tray. These
"failed" reports are sent by HP Telex after a specified number of
attempts to deliver the message. The retry pattern for each priority
level is pre-configured to comply with local telecommunications authority
requirements and cannot be altered.
