Configuring Foreign Address Aliases
The facility to set up a database of foreign aliases when connecting HP
Desk through an FSC gateway, can provide significant advantages. In some
cases it will be unnecessary, as the external application handling the
messages after passage through the gateway will itself perform conversion
between HP Desk mail addresses and the foreign system's addresses. The
configuration of a database of foreign address aliases does entail an
overhead, though this overhead applies only on one computer as the
configuration must take place on the gateway computer.
If you use HP OfficeConnect to reach a foreign system, for example HP
OfficeConnect to DISOSS for IBM connections, you can configure aliases
for this system from the Foreign Address Alias Information screen, even
if the gateway to the IBM does not exist on your machine. The
Configurator screens used to do this are documented in Chapter 12 of
this manual.
You can give any single user several different aliases, if you wish, so
enabling them to communicate with a number of different foreign systems.
The configuration of foreign address aliases is only part of the
implementation of a foreign service connection, and you should carefully
consider it along with the configuration of the gateway itself, and with
the external application program that works with the gateway.
Good communication is an essential part of the successful configuration
of foreign address aliases. This will be with:
Other HP Desk Since you are here configuring a Directory for
Administrators your whole HP Desk installation, good
communication with any other Administrators in
your network is essential to ensure any changes
are regularly applied to the Directory of
aliased users.
Administrator of the The configuration of a Directory of aliases
Foreign System requires, as does the administration of a
connection to another mail system in general,
careful communication with the Administrator of
the foreign system. This ensures that the
correct information is available to both
Administrators and is kept up to date. You
will need to do this to not only keep address
aliases current, but to ensure information
about the data communication link stays
correct.
If you have a large number of aliases to configure, the batch
configuration is probably more suitable than using the HP Desk
Configurator (see Chapter 13 for details).

How to configure foreign address aliases on a gateway
computer:

1. Identify HP Desk users who require a foreign alias to enable
them to receive mail from a foreign system.

2. Identify users of the foreign system who require an HP Desk
alias.

3. On the foreign system, configure as users each HP Desk user who
you identified above.

4. Run the Configurator by typing MAILCONFIG.

a. At the User Information screen, configure each
identified foreign user as an HP Desk user on the
gateway computer.

b. At the Foreign Address Alias Information screen,
associate a foreign alias with each HP Desk user you
identified in step 2.

Then associate the actual foreign address with
each of the HP Desk users you created in step
4.

For this gateway, each alias must be unique to a
particular user (not shared).

c. Check whether you need to expand the database
to accommodate the increased workload on this
computer.
