HP DeskManager Administration

Audit File

The HP Desk Audit file contains information on the messages that pass
through the HP Desk system on your computer. This enables you to analyze
this file in the case of questions from users about their messages. Each
message is identified by a reference number which the user can look at by
opening the message using the OPEN command. Records are written to the
Audit file in a specified format which may be analyzed by your own
application programs if required. The record formats and a complete list
of events for the entries are in the HP DeskManager Customization manual.

The following events are logged to the Audit file:

   1. Messages being mailed by the user.

   2. Mailroom collecting a message from a user's Out Tray.

   3. Mailroom delivering a message to a user's In Tray.

   4. Acknowledgment of transmission of a message to a remote computer
       by the Master Truck.

   5. Receipt of a message from a remote computer by the Slave Truck.

   6. Messages deferred.

   7. Messages placed on the Error queue.

   8. Badly addressed routed messages returned to the originator.

   9. Undeliverable Private messages disposed.

  10. Size of message en route to another HP 3000.

All processes are logged to a file called AUDITFIL.MAILDB.HPOFFICE. The
Maintenance job builds a new file every time it runs and renames the
previous one OLDAUDIT.MAILDB.HPOFFICE. The default form of the Audit file
as built by the Maintenance job is:

     :BUILD AUDITFIL.MAILDB.HPOFFICE;REC=-85,15,F,ASCII;DISC=5000,32,1;CIR

The file is usually circular, but this may be changed by altering the
Maintenance job. If you make this change, the file should be
sufficiently large to prevent the "file full" condition being reached.

If the maintenance job is run less frequently, for example because the
Garbage Collector is in use, then it is more likely that the AUDITFIL
file will fill up and data could be lost as the file is a circular log
file.

The job file (called CHNGLOG.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE) is provided to enable the
AUDITFIL information to be stored in the file OLDAUDIT, and then rebuilt.
This would enable the processing of this file and also the processing of
the STATSFIL file more frequently than the maintenance is run. This
could can be run as part of daily system management, for example at
backup time.

NOTE The switching of these files must only take place when the HP Desk system is shutdown completely--the ideal time to perform this operation is therefore when a system backup is complete, immediately before restarting HP Desk.
