HP DeskManager Administration

Statistics File

The HP Desk Statistics file contains information on the operation of the
HP Desk system on your computer. Records are written to the file by the
HP Desk system programs in a specified format whenever certain events
take place. The file may be analyzed by your own application programs to
provide billing information. The record formats and a complete list of
events is described in the HP DeskManager Customization manual.

The following types of events are logged to the Statistics File:

   1. Mailroom startup and shutdown.

   2. Transport system startup and shutdown.

   3. Master Truck initialization and shutdown.

   4. Slave Truck initialization and shutdown.

   5. NS monitor, Bin Emptier, Garbage Collector start up and shutdown.

   6. User sign on to and sign off from the User Interface program,
AdvanceMail, NewWave Mail and the Intrinsics.

   7. User interface termination due to invalid password (after four
chances to enter the correct password).

   8. Traffic scheduler clock tick (every fifteen minutes).

   9. Commands from the Transport Manager to Master Trucks (open NS
connection or DS line, send mail, suspend transmissions, and so
       on).

  10. Status messages from Master Trucks to the Transport Manager
       (including network errors).

  11. Message transmission statistics by Master Trucks and Slave Trucks.

All processes log to a file called STATSFIL.MAILDB.HPOFFICE. The
Maintenance job builds a new one every time it runs and RENAMEs the
previous one OLDSTATS.MAILDB.HPOFFICE. If you wish to disable statistics
collection, an appropriate file equation can be issued. The default form
of the Statistics file as built by the Maintenance job is:

     :BUILD STATSFIL.MAILDB.HPOFFICE;REC=-85,15,F,ASCII;DISC=5000,32,1;CIR

The file is usually circular, but this may be changed by altering the
Maintenance job. If you make this change, the file should be
sufficiently large to prevent the "file full" condition being reached.

If the maintenance job is run less frequently, for example because the
Garbage Collector is in use, then it is more likely that the STATSFIL
file will fill up and data could be lost as the file is a circular log
file.

The job file (called CHNGLOG.MAILJOB.HPOFFICE) is provided to enable the
STATSFIL information to be stored in the file OLDSTATS, and then rebuilt.
This would enable the processing of this file and also the processing of
the AUDITFIL file more frequently than the maintenance is run. This
could can be run as part of daily system management, for example at
backup time.

NOTE The switching of these files must only take place when the HP Desk system is shutdown completely--the ideal time to perform this operation is therefore when a system backup is complete, immediately before restarting HP Desk.

NOTE If you want to produce network statistics, both the Audit and Stats files must contain all the records logged to those files since the last maintenance job run. For meaningful results to be obtained the files cannot be switched. This means that the file must be created sufficiently large enough to accommodate all the records logged between one maintenance run and the next.
