Controlling System Activity

Handling Forms Requests

This section describes procedures for replying to forms requests,
mounting new forms, and returning the standard paper to the printer. A
forms request is a message sent to the system console or to an associated
user requesting that the standard printer paper be replaced with special
forms (such as checks or invoices). A similar request asks you to
replace the special forms with standard paper.

Forms request tasks are usually performed by the system operator, but
also can be performed by any user who has been associated to the printer
by the ASSOCIATE command. Once a user is associated with a device,
messages for that device go to the terminal of the associated user
instead of the system console.

The Forms Request Message

The request to mount special forms may appear like this on the system
console or associated user terminal:

?11:20/22/FORMS ON LDEV#12; PLEASE MOUNT PAYCHECK FORMS.
     ?11:20/22/SP#12/IS #S93; OUTFILE ON LDEV#12 (Y/N)?

Where:

11:20 Is the time of the request.

22 Is the process identification number (PIN) of the spooler process
                  which owns logical device 12.

SP#12 Indicates a spooler process which owns logical device 12.

The system operator (or associated user) can reply with YES, which
indicates that the device is available and the spoolfile will be printed
on the special forms. If the system operator or associated user replies
NO, it means the required printer is not available.

Sending a YES Reply

To send a YES reply, enter:

     REPLY 22,Y

Where 22 is the pin number that appeared in the system console request.
Y is your agreement to mount the special forms.

Sending a NO Reply

To send a NO reply, enter:

     REPLY 22,N

The request will keep repeating until the system operator responds Y or
N:

     ?11:20/22/SP#12/IS #S93; OUTFILE ON LDEV#12 (Y/N)?

NOTE A request from a user causes the indefinite suspension of the requesting program. Therefore, the system operator should reply to a request as soon as possible. If the request cannot be fulfilled, the system operator replies by assigning a logical device number of 0 or by replying NO. This clears the request and permits the user program to resume running.
