Controlling System Activity

Console Functions

The system console is the control and message center of the system. In
consequence, its screen is constantly busy. From the system console, the
system operator receives logon and logoff messages, monitors log files
and system security, replies to user requests, sends messages, receives
user and error messages (refer to appendix D) and provides other users
with privileged access to system operator commands and control of
resources.

Before a session or job can be processed, MPE XL must determine its
status relative to all other sessions and jobs waiting to be processed.
Where and when a job is processed depends on various job and system
priority values, and the availability of the system resources required by
the job.

Most of the time, the system operator controls system resources, but not
always. For example, a particular printer may be "hot" (disconnected
from the system spooler and under the control of an interactive user).
In such case, that printer is not available, and no job that depends on
it can execute until the printer is released and again made available to
the system.

Possible limits on resources include:

 * The size of MPE XL tables. An insufficient number of table entries
will prevent the execution of a job or session since MPE XL will not
be able to monitor and manage the process.

 * The availability of a list device, whether that device is spooled or
dedicated to a single process. If the device is unavailable, the job
will remain in a WAIT state. Sessions will not wait. If trying from
a session, you must retry until the device becomes available.
