HP System Dictionary XL Gen. Ref. Vol. 2-Part 3 SDCONV
Error Handling
SDCONV makes distinctions among three categories of errors.
The first is the syntax errors. These are errors caused by typographical
errors and illegal command syntax constructions. When these errors are
detected, a caret is displayed beneath the erroneous command line where
the error was discovered, and an error message is issued. If the command
issued is an invalid command, it is not logged into the log file.
The second category consists of operational errors. These errors are
caused by commands that request invalid operations. For example,
requesting LOAD when no System Dictionary is open is an operational
error. Error messages will be displayed in response to these errors.
The third category consists of fatal errors. These are usually file
system related errors that the program has very little or no control
over. When such an error is detected, the program is usually terminated.
Failure to open $STDINX is such an error.
