Installing and Configuring HP X.400 Administrator's Guide
Address Translation
Most ADMD services only accept messages into their service from X.400
addresses which are known to them. For example, ATTMAIL requires that
the originator of a message must have an X.400 address with the values
C=US and A=ATTMAIL. If the originator of the message has an X.400 address
with a different value for the country and ADMD name, the message is
rejected.
If a single machine must connect to more than one ADMD service, it is not
possible to send messages directly to all ADMDs. All but one message
will be rejected since every X.400 MTA has only one country, ADMD, and
PRMD associated with it.
Address translation allows a single machine to connect to more than one
ADMD because messages leaving a single machine have the country and ADMD
values required by the ADMD to which they are sent. For example, the
originator O/R address of a message sent through the ATTMAIL service has
the values C=US and A=ATTMAIL while a message from the same originator
sent through the MCIMAIL service has an O/R address with values C=US and
A=MCIMAIL.
With address translation, the user sending a message would not need to
know which ADMD service is being used and would not be affected if the
ADMD service changes.
Address translation is performed for both incoming and outgoing messages.
When the MTA checks if the O/R address belongs to a user group for a user
group with address translation enabled, the country and ADMD of the O/R
address are disregarded in this check.
For outgoing messages being sent to an adjacent MTA whose country and/or
ADMD differ from that of the local MTA, all O/R addresses in the message
are checked to see if they belong to a user group with address
translation enabled. The country and ADMD are disregarded in this check.
If an O/R address does belong to such a user group, the country and ADMD
in the address are changed to the country and ADMD configured for the
adjacent MTA.
For incoming messages being received from an adjacent MTA, all O/R
addresses in the message are checked to see if they belong to a user
group with address translation enabled. The country and ADMD are
disregarded in this check. If an O/R address does belong to such a user
group, the country and ADMD in the address are changed to the country and
ADMD configured for the user group.
As a general rule, address translation should be enabled for user groups
made up of users from inside the organization and disabled for user
groups made up of users from outside the organization.
