HP ALLBASE/4GL Run-Time Administration Manual
Setting the Administrator Password
The following procedures are optional. You don't need to set an
administrator password if you don't have any particular security
requirements at your site. However, any user who successfully signs on
to HP ALLBASE/4GL with the name administ automatically gains access to
the administrator application.
To set or change the system administrator password you must use the
administrator validation screen. To access this screen, select the User
Definitions and Security option on the main menu, then select the
Administrator Validation option on the user validation menu.
On this screen, the administrator name is shown as administ. You cannot
change this name.
This screen has three fields identified as Current Password, New Password
and Repeat New Password. The Current Password field is only active if
you have already defined your password as system administrator.
CAUTION If you define or change the system administrator password, make
sure that you can remember the password. If you forget your
password, you will not be able to sign on as the HP ALLBASE/4GL
system administrator.
Defining a New Password
If you haven't defined a password, the Current Password field is not
active and the cursor moves to the New Password field.
To define a new password, enter the password in the New Password field.
The password can have up to eight characters. It must start with an
alphabetic character and can use alphabetic characters, 0 to 9, _
(underscore), and trailing spaces. The password is not echoed to the
screen as you type it in.
You must now enter exactly the same password in the Repeat New Password
field. If you don't enter the same password, HP ALLBASE/4GL displays an
error message and returns the cursor to the New Password field.
It's important to remember that HP ALLBASE/4GL is case sensitive with
respect to passwords. This means that a password using uppercase letters
(such as Secret) is not the same as the same password in lowercase
letters (secret).
If you don't want to assign a password for the system administrator,
leave the New Password and the Repeat New Password fields blank. Step
through these fields by pressing Return.
Changing Your Password
If you have already defined a password, the Current Password field is
active. In order to modify the password, you must enter your current
password in this field. After you enter the correct password, the New
Password field becomes active. If you enter an incorrect password, the
cursor jumps over the New Password and Repeat New Password fields and
goes to the first description field.
After you enter the correct password in the Current Password field, you
can enter your new password in the New Password field. The password must
start with an alphabetic character and can use alphabetic characters, 0
to 9, _ (underscore), and trailing spaces. Remember that HP ALLBASE/4GL
is case sensitive with respect to passwords.
You must enter exactly the same new password in the Repeat New Password
field.
To delete an existing password, enter the current password in the Current
Password field. Leave the New Password and Repeat New Password fields
blank by pressing Return twice.
Completing the Screen
After you have defined or altered your system administrator password, you
can alter or add to the description fields at the bottom of this screen.
These fields contain a standard description for the system administrator,
but you can change this description if you need a more specific
description for your site. You cannot leave these fields blank.
When you have finished your entries on this screen, press the Commit
Data function key.
