HP ALLBASE/4GL Run-Time Administration Manual
HP ALLBASE/4GL Users
The HP ALLBASE/4GL run-time environment has two types of users. They
are:
* The system administrator.
* Application end users.
You can assign user names to all users other than yourself as system
administrator. (The user name administ is reserved for the system
administrator.) In addition, for all user types, you can specify that
the user must enter a password to sign on to HP ALLBASE/4GL.
System Administrator
Whenever the HP ALLBASE/4GL administrator signs on (with the user name
administ), HP ALLBASE/4GL automatically runs the administrator
application. This application gives the system administrator the
capacity to access or change any of the system administration functions.
Any user who has access to the administrator application can access any
part of the HP ALLBASE/4GL system.
Application End Users
The HP ALLBASE/4GL end user security system is best understood by
examining the procedure that a user must follow to sign on to HP
ALLBASE/4GL and run an application.
An end user signing on to HP ALLBASE/4GL using the standard sign-on
screen must perform the following actions:
1. Enter a valid HP ALLBASE/4GL user name on the sign-on screen. If
the user enters an incorrect name, HP ALLBASE/4GL displays an
error message. The user cannot continue without correcting the
error and entering a valid name.
2. Enter the correct password for the user name. This step is not
required if a password is not defined for the user. If a password
is defined, the user must enter the correct password within three
attempts. If the user does not enter the correct password in
three attempts, HP ALLBASE/4GL displays an error message and
returns the cursor to the User Name field.
3. Enter the name of an application or version to run. HP
ALLBASE/4GL only accepts this name if the application or version
exists and the user's name is on the list of authorized users for
the application or version. If the user enters an incorrect
application name, or if the user is not on the list of authorized
users, HP ALLBASE/4GL displays an error message.
4. Enter the correct password for the application or version. This
step is not required if a password for the application or version
is not defined. If the application or version does have a
password, the user must enter the correct password within three
attempts. If the user does not enter the correct password within
three attempts, HP ALLBASE/4GL displays an error message and
returns the cursor to the User Name field.
A user can also sign on to HP ALLBASE/4GL using the log-on bypass system.
However, the correct user and application passwords must be included on
the command line. Refer to Chapter 2 for details of the HP
ALLBASE/4GL log-on bypass system.
As system administrator, you can assign user names and, optionally, user
passwords, for all system users. You can also enter a list of authorized
users for each application on your HP ALLBASE/4GL system.
In addition to entering the names of authorized users, you can assign a
password to any application.
Menu Item Security.
Within each application you can secure particular menu items. If you
secure a menu item, only the authorized users for the menu item can
select it. Otherwise, all authorized users for the application can
select the item.
Training Mode.
HP ALLBASE/4GL provides a training mode for new users of applications.
In training mode, a user can run an application and use it to read data
from existing data files. However, the user's input is not written to
the data files, and the data files are not changed. This feature allows
a user to "explore" an application safely.
The end user validation screen contains a field that allows you to put a
user into training mode.
