COMMUNICATOR 3000 MPE MPE/iX RELEASE 4.0
HP 5000 Model F100 Support
by Harvey Skinner and David Kilby
Commercial Systems Division
Hewlett-Packard is proud to announce the first member of the HP 5000
family of production capacity printers supported on MPE/iX. The Model
F100 is a 100 page per minute, fanfold printer based on the HP Printer
Command Language (PCL), the printer language of the industry-leading HP
LaserJet printers.
DEVICE FEATURES
The HP 5000 Model F100 is positioned not only to be the system printer of
choice for high-end HP 3000/9xx computer systems, but also to be an
upgrade/replacement to the HP 2680 and HP 256x printers. The F100 comes
standard with a single-ended small computer systems interface (SCSI) for
connection to the host HP 3000/9xx computer system.
Features of the HP 5000 Model F100 include:
* Industry's first production capacity printers based on HP PCL, the
printer language made industry-dominant by the HP LaserJet
printers.
* Print speeds of 100 pages per minute (ppm) on letter size (8.5
inches by 11 inches) paper with monthly print volumes up to 2.8
million pages per month.
* Non-impact, edge-to-edge LED page printing technology at 300 dots
per inch resolution for crisp text and graphics.
* Rich set of internal fonts.
* Single-ended, SCSI-2 interface for connection to the HP-PA HP 3000
system using an HP Adapter host system interface.
* Two electrical configurations of the Model F100 are available, 60
Hz and 50 Hz. There are also additional options available for use
with the Model F100.
PCL Level 4 Print Language
As the industry's first production capacity printer based on HP PCL level
4, the F100 can utilize the output from many off-the-shelf, PC-based
LaserJet printer formatting tools that can be uploaded to the HP 3000.
You can now print electronic forms, bar codes, logos, 2-up and 4-up
formats, and merged text and sophisticated graphics all at a crisp 300
dots per inch, at production speeds and in production volumes.
For migration from HP256x line printer products, the PCL extension
commands for Vertical Forms Control (VFC) have also been implemented on
the HP 5000.
From the desktop to the data center, from an 8 ppm LaserJet to a 100 ppm
Model F100, the choice is yours. With the Model F100, you can now print
PCL data directly on a production capacity printer. There is no need to
have offline or delayed print processes to convert your PCL print data to
an internal printer language, as is usually required with other
production capacity printers.
Print Specifications
The Model F100 provides the following print capabilities:
* The Model F100 engine speed for 8 1/2 "x 11" pages is 100 pages
per minute. (Specific print job throughput is application
dependent and print speed may be slower for complex page images.)
* Paper input capacity of the Model F100 is approximately 3600 pages
while the output stacker holds approximately 4000 pages. Roll
feed and other paper handling devices can be attached to provide
greater capacities.
* High quality continuous feed paper is required. Best results are
obtained with 18 to 28 lb paper.
* Physical paper width ranges from 6.5 inches (165 mm) to 18 inches
(457.2 mm) including perforation. Form height fold-to-fold ranges
from 6 inches (152.4 mm) to 16 inches (406.4 mm).
* All points on the page are addressable with edge-to-edge printing
in all directions up to a maximum 13.875 inch image width. For
best results, the paper feed sprocket holes must be kept free from
print.
Non-Impact, All-Points-Addressable LED Technology
Using state-of-the-art Gallium Arsenide Light Emitting Diode (LED) page
printing technology, the F100 is technically designed for production
capacity printing. The solid state, highly reliable LED array is a
linear assembly of tightly packed light-emitting diodes, packed several
hundred to the inch. The fast switching LED array generates a precise
print image on the surface of a rotating photoconductor drum. Offering
sharp dot image, consistent dot size, and accurate dot positioning, the
LED array provides a high degree of gray scale uniformity and print
quality at 300 dots per inch, addressable at any point on the paper,
edge-to-edge.
Internal Fonts
The F100 printer is equipped with 20 internal bitmapped fonts and 14
internal symbol sets as the foundation of your print capabilities.
Additional fonts are available online from the HP 3000 host in the form
of the standard HP 2680 environment files, which have been modified to be
compatible with the HP 5000 and the HP 2680. Customized environment
files are not automatically compatible and need to be converted/migrated
before using them on the HP 5000. Adding additional dimensions to your
font selection is the hundreds of off-the-shelf packages that are
available for HP LaserJet printers. The fonts from these PC-based
software packages can easily be uploaded to the HP 3000 system and then
downloaded to the HP 5000 printer as binary data. The internal bitmapped
fonts and symbol sets on the HP 5000 are:

SCSI Interface Specifications
The Model F100 comes standard with a single-ended, SCSI-2/HPCS (HP Common
SCSI) compliant interface. The Model F100 can be connected to an HP-PA
HP 3000 system using either of the available SCSI Device Adapter host
system interfaces; HP 27251A interface for CIO (Computer I/O) based
systems and HP 28642A for NIO (Native I/O) based systems. The Model F100
SCSI interface supports synchronous data transfer capability for high
speed data rates.
For computer room layouts that require the printer to be further than
three meters away from the host computer system, Fiber-optic SCSI
Extenders (P/N 28643A) can be used to reach distances of 50 and 100
meters.
World Class Support
By taking advantage of HP world class support services, you can rely on
the HP industry-leading support resources to keep your printers up and
running. Among the benefits of an HP support contract are sophisticated
remote diagnostic capabilities that help solve problems remotely to
reduce your downtime.

SOFTWARE FEATURES AND BENEFITS
The software modifications that have been made to MPE/iX to support the
HP 5000 model F100 are:
* The standard HP 2680 environment files that are provided on each
release of MPE in the HPENV.SYS group have been modified with this
release of MPE/iX to provide support for the Model F100 printer.
To maintain compatibility with the HP 2680 font metrics, many of
these modified standard environment files print out at a simulated
180 dots-per-inch resolution. For information regarding migration
from an HP 2680 page printer to the Model HP 5000 F100 printer,
please refer to the Migrating From the HP 2680A to the HP 5000
Series Printers manual (C2750-90002).
* Because the Model F100 requires a constant stream of print data at
fast I/O rates to keep the printer running at the rated print
engine speed of 100 pages-per-minute, the Model F100 is supported
only as a spooled output device. No changes were made to the NM
Spooler. Page level recovery features for the NM Spooler are
supported in the lower level I/O software components developed to
support the HP 5000 Model F100.
* The system generation (SYSGEN) utility supports configuration of
the Model F100 by using the string HP 5000/F100 as the product ID.
* Lower level software I/O components support attachment and
operation of the Model F100 on HP-PA HP 3000 systems using either
of the available SCSI Device Adapter host system interfaces; HP
27251A interface for CIO (Computer I/O) based systems and HP
28642A for NIO (Native I/O) based systems.
* MPE/iX software keeps records of printer hardware failures in the
system's log files where they are accessible for review by system
managers and for automatic analysis by HP Predictive Support
software.
