DBChange Plus Enhancements

by RJ Diepeveen
Commercial Systems Division

MPE/iX Release 4.0 includes significant enhancements to TurboIMAGE/XL.
Several of these enhancements affect the TurboIMAGE/XL utility programs
and related maintenance products. DBChange Plus is enhanced to keep pace
with TurboIMAGE/XL.

The areas of enhancement relate to the following TurboIMAGE/XL
enhancements:

   *   Third Party Indexing Interface
   * IEEE Floating Point Real Numbers
   * Four (4) Gigabyte Dataset Size

These new features are described in the articles entitled "TurboIMAGE/XL
Enhancements" and "TurboIMAGE/XL Enhancement Details" included in this
Communicator.

THIRD PARTY INDEXING INTERFACE SUPPORT

The Third Party Indexing (TPI) Interface is a seamless integration of
TurboIMAGE/XL with the OMNIDEX from Dynamic Information Systems
Corporation (DISC) or SUPERDEX from Bradmark Technologies Inc. Each of
these products has file requirements that make up the logical database.
DBChange Plus is enhanced to work with the logical database.

For the variety of functions available within DBChange Plus such as COPY,
RESTRUCTURE, REPACK or ERASE, the database files and indexes files are
handled as one. Each of the products, SUPERDEX or OMNIDEX, will have
different requirements due to the proprietary nature of their products.
Specific details for these functions should be obtained from the
respective vendors.

IEEE FLOATING POINT REAL NUMBERS

TurboIMAGE/XL now supports IEEE Floating Point Real Numbers with data
types E2 and E4 for single and double precision. DBChange Plus now
supports this data type when adding and changing items in databases.

It should be noted that although the data type is new, IEEE Real Number
data in TurboIMAGE/XL items is not new. Many users have chosen to store
the IEEE Real values in the R (HP3000 Real Number) data type. The only
limitation in this implementation was that HP supplied tools, such as
Query, were unable to correctly display or manipulate this data. That
task was always left to the user programs that understood the data as
being IEEE Real Numbers.

DBChange Plus is enhanced to perform conversions of data from one type to
another, for example from I2 to E2, or from R2 to E2. DBChange Plus can
also do data type changing without data conversion. So, for those R2
data types with single precision IEEE Real data being stored in them,
DBChange Plus can change the data type from R2 to E2 without performing
the data conversion.

These enhancements to DBChange Plus allows you to more quickly take
advantage of these new data types in your applications.

FOUR (4) GIGABYTE DATASET SIZES

File sizes can now reach a maximum size of four (4) gigabytes, up from
two (2) gigabytes in the previous release. TurboIMAGE/XL is enhanced to
handle datasets this size, and DBChange Plus is enhanced to make them
that large.

As DBChange Plus processes a dataset capacity change, it calculates the
required new file size and, if less than or equal to 4GB, process the
request with the file system. A common reason for not having the request
satisfied would be an out of disc space condition.

This enhancement allows your databases to grow with your business.

CONCLUSION

As TurboIMAGE/XL continues to be enhanced so will the supporting products
from Hewlett-Packard. DBChange Plus is keeping pace with TurboIMAGE/XL.
