WHAT DOES SYSTEM MANAGER DO? The following information describes the
features of HP OpenView System Manager and their functions:
* System Status Notification. The status for managed nodes shows
the event message severity level of those nodes. This status is
indicated by alarms that are graphically displayed on the HP
OpenView Windows Workstation.
* Control Console. The control console provides control of system
startup, networking startup, and system diagnostics. The control
console uses a physical connection to the system console. This
can be a dial-up modem connection, DTCs, or a PAD connection. The
control console is intended for use in a emergency situation where
the operating system is down, and it is necessary to boot. It is
not intended for normal operations.
* Management Session. The management session provides control of
normal operations while the system and its networking are up. The
management session is a software emulation of the system soft
console on a managed system. All console commands that were
previously limited to the system console can now be executed on
the management session. Multiple management sessions can be open
at the same time to the same system. The management session runs
over the existing network, so no additional hardware is necessary.
* Event Message Review. A review mechanism is provided to detail
problems on all managed nodes and the time they occurred. It
includes a description of the cause of events and shows the
outstanding events chronologically or according to their severity
level on the network. The message review process allows you to
print, annotate, remove, and view event messages.
* Event Message Log. The EML is a database that resides on the
management node and records events occurring on all configured
managed nodes. These events are occurrences on the node that
users or processes must be made aware of. You can generate a
report of events even if these messages have been removed from the
message review process.
* NMEvent API. This procedure is available on all managed nodes and
allows user-written applications to log events through HP OpenView
System Manager and to display alarms on the map. NMEvent events
have user-specified severity and use the same event message
routing as console messages.
WHAT IS NEW WITH SYSTEM MANAGER? The PC portion of HP OpenView System
Manager has been updated to run under MS Windows 3.0 in enhanced mode.
This provides you with increased capacity provided by the enhanced memory
management features of MS Windows 3.0.
The release of HP OpenView System Manager available on XL Release 2.2
provided one way of accessing the system console by using a PAD. With
this release of HP OpenView System Manager, two other alternatives are
available. Modems or back-to-back DTCs can now be used to provide the
same capability as the PAD. These alternatives allow you to start up a
managed system connected to a LAN or point-to-point network.
WHAT ARE THE SYSTEM MANAGER SOFTWARE COMPONENTS? HP OpenView System
Manager is a distributed application, with functionality residing on the
HP`OpenView Windows Workstation, on a central management node, and on
each managed node. There are three software components.
* HP OpenView Workstation Software. The HP OpenView Workstation
provides a graphical user interface. Up to five HP OpenView
Workstations can talk to one management node. All necessary
software can be ordered in one package called the HP OpenView
Workstation Bundle, or the software components can be ordered
separately.
* Management Node Software. The management node software runs on a
HP 3000 Series 9xx, and is supported on XL Release 2.2 or later.
One management node can support up to 64 managed nodes.
* Managed Node Software. There are two types of managed node
software. One version runs on MPE V systems, and one version runs
on MPE/iX.
WHAT ARE THE SYSTEM MANAGER HARDWARE COMPONENTS? HP OpenView System
Manager supports any NS network including LAN, X.25, and point-to-point.
The NS network is used to transport events to the management node and to
provide access for a management session to handle day-to-day operations.
The control console is used to start and stop the system, to start and
stop networking, and to run diagnostics. This functionality requires a
separate connection to access the console of the managed system.
HP`OpenView System Manager supports three alternatives for this
connection:
* PAD
* modems
* back-to-back DTCs
