Introducing Host Based X.25 Management

by Don Wilson
Information Networks Division

Host Based X.25 is a single MPE/iX host-based network management system.
It provides management functions for DTCs that are connected to a single
host through a LAN and that are accessing.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONi

Beginning with this MPE/iX release, Host Based X.25 functionality is part
of the fundamental operating system (FOS). DTC/X.25 Network Access (HP
2345A) provides PAD communication capability, while X.25 System Access
(HP 36939A) provides system-to-system capability. Terminals and printers
may be either directly connected or modem-connected to the DTC, while the
X.25 Network Connection is established through the X.25 Network Access
card. Host Based X.25 provides most of this functionality by leveraging
from OV DTC Manager (PC Based X.25 Management) without requiring a
personal computer.i

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY AND FEATURES

The MPE/iX host is responsible for downloading the necessary code or data
to the DTCs, uploading the data from the DTC when the DTC encounters an
error or if a problem is encountered on something like an SNP card, and
provides X.25 monitor and control functions. Diagnostic functions for
the product are performed through an enhanced TermDSM, an existing TIO
diagnostic program running on the MPE/iX host. In addition to the
TIO-related diagnostic functions, TermDSM now provides X.25 related
functions, such as resetting the SNP card, resetting the virtual circuit,
uploading the SNP card, obtaining SNP or virtual circuit status and
tracing. To control X.25 capabilities of the DTC, the new utility
DTCCNTRL is implemented on the host. The utility is used to perform X.25
control functions, such as Starting and Stopping the DTC/X.25 Link,
Start/Stop of PAD Support, Online reconfiguration, status checking, and
so on.

New Features Introduced With Host Based X.25

This version of Host Based X.25 Management provides much of the same
functionality found in OV DTC Manager or PC Based (HP2355A). The
objective in developing Host Based X.25 management was to provide X.25
functionality that could be managed completely from the host. This
design was intended primarily for small-end systems or remote sites that
have only one host on the LAN. As a result, switching functionality was
not incorporated into this product, which limits it to a single system
use of the X.25 Network Access Card.

Host Based X.25 Management provides the following new features:

   * trace formatter that resides on the host within the NMDUMP utility

   * X.25 diagnostics that reside on the host and allow you to
troubleshoot the DTC from the host

   *   DTC powerfail/autorestart recovery

   * call product configuration performed on the host through NMMGR

   * a mechanism on the host that allows you to dynamically reconfigure
       specific X.25 parameters
