COMMUNICATOR 3000 MPE MPE/iX RELEASE 4.0

AutoRestart/XL Enhancements

by Alice Farrelly and Jim Miller
Commercial Systems Division

The AutoRestart/XL product was first introduced with XL Release 2.1.
This article discusses three enhancements made to AutoRestart/XL in this
release of MPE/iX.

On the initial release of AutoRestart/XL the pre-allocated dump file(s)
and the group DISKDUMP.TELESUP were restricted to a non-system volume set
with a name of DISKDUMP_VOLUME_SET. This restriction is now lifted. The
pre-allocated dump file and the group DISKDUMP.TELESUP can be created on
any volume set. You are advised not to create the dump file on the
system volume set because of problems with flushing the dump file
information out to disk. It is best that a non-system volume set be used
to hold the dump files and the group DISKDUMP.TELESUP. The BLDDUMP
utility will warn you accordingly if you attempt to create a dump file on
the system volume set, but it will not stop you from doing so. BLDDUMP
will not allow a dump file to be created on a mirrored volume set.

The compression algorithm within the Dump-to-Disk function of
AutoRestart/XL has been changed. This change reduces the amount of disk
space needed for a dump by an average 50 percent. The program that
estimates the amount of disk space that a dump will require, DTODSIZ, has
been modified to reduce the disk space estimation. The reduction is a
conservative 50 percent because it includes additional factors that were
not considered before and the new LZ data compression. For more
information regarding the algorithm change in Dump-to-Disk, refer to the
article "DUMP/DAT Enhancements" in this Communicator.

A new AUTOBOOT toggle has been added to the BLDDUMP utility. The
AUTOBOOT flag is a flag in Stable Storage that tells the system whether
to look for an AUTOBOOT file or not. The AUTOBOOT flag may now be turned
on, turned off, or checked through the BLDDUMP utility as follows:

(#2) blddump > AUTOBOOT on

Autoboot has been enabled.

(#3) blddump > AUTOBOOT on

Autoboot is already enabled.

(#4) blddump > AUTOBOOT off

Autoboot has been disabled.

(#5) blddump > AUTOBOOT off

Autoboot is already disabled.

(#6) blddump > AUTOBOOT status

Autoboot is off.
