COMMUNICATOR 3000 MPE MPE/iX RELEASE 4.0

Increase in Maximum Logical Devices

by Alice Wang
Commercial Systems Division

Beginning with MPE/iX Release 4.0, the maximum logical device (LDEV)
support on MPE/iX has increased from 999 devices to 2330. Because of
this increase, the ASOCIATE.PUB.SYS file may be incompatible and should
not be ported from one release to another. In the past, the file was
always created for a maximum of 999 device entries. Now, the file is
created based on the maximum LDEVs supported and could cause some
incompatibility concerns.

A check has been added to tell you to run ASOCTBL.PUB.SYS to recreate a
new ASOCIATE.PUB.SYS file. The new error message is displayed only if
you try to execute the ASSOCIATE command and the ASOCIATE.PUB.SYS file is
too small to support the maximum LDEVs currently supported on your
system. The new Command Interpreter (CI) error message created for the
ASOCIATE command is:

ASSOCIATE TABLE INCOMPATIBLE WITH OS. USE ASOCTBL.PUB.SYS TO RECREATE
         ASOCIATE.PUB.SYS (CIERR 3118)

CREATING AN INPUT FILE

The ASOCIATE file is not an editor file and cannot be modified directly.
You may, however, use an editor file as the input for ASOCTBL, by using a
file equation for the format designator INPUT=. The following steps
explain how to store the entries in a file that ASOCTBL can use as an
input file:

   1. Create the editor file using your favorite editor, save the file,
and for our example here we have named the file ASOT.

   2. Establish the editor file as the input file by setting up a file
       equation, such as:

            FILE INPUT=ASOT

   3. Now type the following:

            RUN ASOCTBL.PUB.SYS

These suggestions are not a new feature, but save you time by eliminating
the need to enter each entry interactively the next time you want to
update the ASOCIATE.PUB.SYS file.

CONCLUSION

Because the maximum LDEV support has been increased from 999 to 2330 in
MPE/iX Release 4.0, all ASOCIATE.PUB.SYS files ported from earlier
releases to this MPE/iX release must be recreated.
