NEW FEATURES FOR ALLBASE/NET

A major new feature has been added to ALLBASE/NET, the ability to connect
between HP 3000 Series 900 systems and HP 9000 Series 300/600/800
systems.

ALLBASE/NET is the first Hewlett-Packard product in the evolutionary path
toward a true distributed database management system. Data may be stored
on different machines for many reasons, such as ownership, size,
performance, or security. ALLBASE/NET allows users to access ALLBASE/SQL
databases which are physically located on different machines. Access to
the remote database is completely transparent to the user.

ALLBASE/NET provides users in an ALLBASE/SQL environment on one system
(the client system) to transparently access an ALLBASE/SQL database on a
remote system (the server system).

The following applications can be used with ALLBASE/NET on the client
system to access a DBEnvironment on a server system:

   * ALLBASE/ISQL (ALLBASE Interactive SQL) user interface.

   *   ALLBASE/QUERY.

   *   ALLBASE/4GL.

   *   ALLBASE/SQL preprocessors and preprocessed user-written
       applications.

   *   Information Access.

ALLBASE/NET gives users all the same capabilities accessing a remote
DBEnvironment as they have accessing local DBEnvironments except:

   * DBEnvironments cannot be created remotely (START DBE NEW).

   * New log files cannot be created remotely (STARTDBE NEWLOG).

   * Long field data types cannot be used remotely.

   * Database administration utilities cannot access a remote
       DBEnvironment (SQLUtil, SQLGEN, SQLMigrate, and SQLCheck).

CONNECTIVITY

ALLBASE/NET now allows cross-platform connectivity. Any combination of
the following systems is supported as a client/server ALLBASE/NET
connection:

Client/Server

HP 3000 Series 900
HP 9000 Series 800
HP 9000 Series 600
HP 9000 Series 300

Diskless HP 9000 Series 300/800 systems are supported as clients only.
They can be connected to ALLBASE/SQL databases on HP 9000 Series
300/600/800 and HP 3000 Series 900 systems through ALLBASE/NET.

The client is connected to the server through either a local or wide area
network. For HP 3000 Series 900 systems, Network Services is used for
the LAN connection and Network Services with X.25 is used for the wide
area network connection. For the HP 9000 Series 300/600/800, Network
Services, ARPA/Berkeleyservices and X.25 protocols are supported.

ALLBASE/SQL and ALLBASE/NET are required on each client and server
system.
