COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL XL RELEASE 3.0
Introducing ALLBASE/DB2 CONNECT
by Jim Nagler
Commercial Systems Division/DBL
Hewlett-Packard is pleased to introduce a new product, ALLBASE/DB2
CONNECT. This product features the ability to read and update DB2 data
from an MPE XL system.
INTRODUCING ALLBASE/DB2 CONNECT
Using ALLBASE/DB2 CONNECT, access to the DB2 data can be obtained from an
HP 3000 terminal connection, a PC interactive interface connected to the
HP 3000, 3000-based ISQL or Host batch command files, or PC-based command
files. Terminals and PCs are supported through serial or LAN connections
to the HP 3000. The connection from the HP 3000 to the IBM system is a
serial SNA connection.
ALLBASE/DB2 CONNECT FEATURES
ALLBASE/DB2 CONNECT provides access to DB2 databases from an ALLBASE
environment. Users define and manipulate DB2 views and tables using SQL.
Access to the DB2 data is provided through ISQL or Information Access in
the same manner as with ALLBASE/SQL data. Data translation and
conversion between the HP and IBM systems is completely transparent to
the user.
ALLBASE/DB2 CONNECT provides the following features:
* Reads DB2 data.
* Updates or inserts DB2 data.
* Provides full support of the DB2 SQL Data Manipulation Language.
* Provides tansparent translation of data between DB2 and
ALLBASE/SQL.
* Shares SNA communications access to the IBM server.
DB2 from ISQL
With this new product, the ALLBASE/SQL Interactive SQL (ISQL) can now
access DB2 on a remote IBM server the same way ISQL accesses local
ALLBASE/SQL.
DB2 From Information Access
With this new ALLBASE product, Information Access DB2 data is accessed in
the same manner as ALLBASE/SQL data by Information Access.
ALLBASE/NETUtil
The ALLBASE NETUtil program is extended to support DB2 connections.
AliasDB File entries are expanded to optionally include information
required for a DB2 connection. NETUsers file entries are used to support
identification of HP users as DB2 authorized users. Password
verifications can be enforced by IBM MVS external security mechanisms to
ensure DB2 data access security and provide DB2 host autonomy.
HP 3000 Connectivity Interface
The DB2 access connection can share an existing HP 3000-to- IBM SNA
connection. Switched lines are also supported.
An illustration of the SNA LU6.2 connection for this environment is
contained in the following figure:
