COMMUNICATOR 3000/XL XL RELEASE 3.0

Chapter 3 DATA COMMUNICATIONS

LAN Manager/XL Named Pipes

by Bill Lund
Information Networks Division

HP has announced its intention to provide support for LAN Manager across
all of its computer platforms. LAN Manager is a networking component of
New Wave Office. With New Wave Office, OfficeShare, and support for LAN
Manager clients, the user today can share resources, manage personal
applications, and benefit from a wide variety of information access and
distribution products. Support for LAN Manager on the HP 3000 Series 900
will enhance these capabilities.

The initial release of LAN Manager on the HP 3000 Series 900 is for the
Application Program Interface (API) Named Pipes. Named Pipes is a
mechanism used by application programs to talk to each other and to
exchange information. This exchange is the foundation on which
client/server computing is based. Named Pipes is the API of choice for
all LAN Manager client/server implementations and the benefit to the
customer is interoperability. With a common API, LAN Manager clients
from one vendor will be able to communicate with LAN Manager servers from
other vendors.

HP LAN Manager/XL Named Pipes is now available on the Corporate Price
List and will be shipping with MPE XL release 3.0. HP LAN Manager/XL
Named Pipes introduces LAN Manager functionality to the HP 3000 Series
900. This product is intended for developers and users of Named Pipe
client/server applications using the HP 3000 Series 900 as an application
server.

KEY FEATURES

   * Named Pipe API is consistent with LAN Manager/X and LAN Manager
OS/2 APIs and is an industry standard for interprocess
       communication.

   * Administrative interface is consistent with LAN Manager/X.

   * HP LAN Manager/XL Named Pipes is interoperable with LAN Manager
over TCP/IP using RFC NetBIOS, specifically HP LAN Manager for
       OS/2 and DOS, and 3COM 3+Open using TCP/IP transport.

   * HP LAN Manager/XL Named Pipes for MPE/XL includes unlimited
license for HP LAN Manager for OS/2 and DOS client workstations.

   * Programmer's reference manual is included with HP LAN Manager/XL
       Named Pipes.

   * HP LAN Manager/XL Named Pipes application development support is
included in D1815A and D1816A support products from CND.

   * HP LAN Manager/XL Named Pipes supports LAN Manager 1.0 Service
       Message Block (SMB) protocol specifications.

   * Server can be configured to announce existence of the HP 3000
       server on the network.

   * Over 100 connections can be supported, relative to the maximum TCP
connections available on the system and system overall capacity.

FIRST LAN MANAGER IMPLEMENTATION ON HP 3000 SERIES 900

HP LAN Manager/XL Named Pipes introduces the first LAN Manager
functionality on MPE/XL. The thrust of this release is to provide
developers and users of client/server architectures a tool necessary for
building true cooperative computing environments. Named Pipes is the
industry leading open API for PC networking, developed by Microsoft and
included in OS/2 and LAN Manager. The HP implementation on MPE XL builds
on the HP successful LAN Manager/X product on Unix.

LAN MANAGER DEVELOPER SUPPORT

Support for developers of LAN Manager applications is available
through the D1815A and D1816A products. These products provide a
one-stop-shopping 24 hours a day approach to developers who are
interested in direct contact with the factory for consultation and
development of LAN Manager based products. MPE/XL, UNIX, OS/2 and DOS
consultation is provided in this product through access to an HP
dedicated LAN Manager support area in CompuServe.
