This section teaches you how to access the Threshold Manager utility and display the Thmgr: prompt. You learn how to enable (turn on) and disable (turn off) threshold management. This section includes a sample global configuration display that is similar to what you see on your system console. Finally, you learn how to exit the Threshold Manager utility.

To access Threshold Manager

Before you can enable or disable threshold management, or execute any of the other Threshold Manager commands available to you, you must access the Threshold Manager utility. To do so, enter the following command at the MPE prompt:

   :RUN THMGR.PUB.SYS

You will see the following prompt:

   Thmgr:

You can enter any of the Threshold Manager commands at the Thmgr: prompt. For an overview of the commands, read “Using Threshold Manager Commands” later in this chapter.

To enable Threshold Manager

To turn on (enable) Threshold Manager, enter the following command at the Thmgr: prompt:

   Thmgr: ENABLEMANAGER

If this is the first time you have enabled Threshold Manager, it uses the default configuration installed at the factory. If not, and you have made any configuration changes while Threshold Manager was disabled, they will now take effect.

To study resource usage on your system, enter the following command at the Thmgr: prompt:

   Thmgr: SHOW

Read the CV% column in the global configuration display. An example of this display appears on the next page, with the figure callouts described on the page that follows.

NOTE: If you prefer, you can also observe current resource usage as a graph by entering the DISPLAY command at the Threshold Manager prompt. To see resource usage as a graph, Threshold Manager must be enabled.

[Threshold Manager Global Configuration Display]

The numbered elements of the Threshold Manager Global Configuration Display shown on the previous page are described below.

  1. Indicates if Threshold Manager is enabled or disabled.

  2. Indicates if notifications are enabled or disabled at the global level.

  3. Indicates the time elapsed (in seconds) between each Threshold Manager operating cycle.

  4. Indicates if monitoring of an individual resource is enabled or disabled.

  5. Indicates the names of the resources monitored by Threshold Manager.

  6. Indicates the current consumption of a resource. The current value is indicated as a percentage (%) of the total resource. It takes one time interval to refresh the current value. When Threshold Manager is initially enabled, zeroes appear in this column until the first operating cycle is complete.

  7. Indicates the level at which the first (or only) threshold has been set. The value is indicated as a percentage (%) of the total resource.

  8. An X in this column indicates a notification has been set for a specific resource at this threshold level.

  9. Indicates the level at which the second threshold (if present), has been set. The value is indicated as a percentage (%) of the total resource.

  10. An X in this column indicates a notification has been set for a specific resource at this second threshold level.

  11. An X in this column indicates if a control has been set for a specific resource at this second threshold level.

To disable Threshold Manager

Use the DISABLEMANAGER command to turn off, or disable, threshold management on your system. Once you execute this command, the effects of the controls that have been executed are reversed or nullified, the system no longer monitors resources and returns to its normal state.

To turn off Threshold Manager, at the Thmgr: prompt enter:

   Thmgr: DISABLEMANAGER

To exit Threshold Manager

To exit Threshold Manager, enter the following command at the Thmgr: prompt:

   Thmgr: EXIT

You will see the MPE prompt displayed on the screen.

This command does not stop the Threshold Manager program. If Threshold Manager is active, it will remain active after you issue the EXIT command.
