From time to time, it may be necessary to remove peripheral devices from, and return devices to, the system. Use the DOWN and UP commands, respectively, to do so.

To remove a device from system use

To remove a device from the system, type the DOWN command followed by the LDEV number of the device. For example, to down LDEV 23, enter:

   DOWN 23
CAUTION: When a device is powered down, subsequent access to that device can result in indefinite waiting, erroneous transfers, or other incorrect operations. Often these failures occur with no indication to the system operator or to the user. For these reasons, use the DOWN command before a device is powered down for removal. This commands does not apply to the console or to disk drives.

To return a device for system use

To return a particular device to its normal function on the system, use the UP command. For example, to bring LDEV 23 back up, enter:

   UP 23
